  1. Hi, I'm an Alexander Technique teacher and I've recently started teaching in Sheffield. I'm hoping to work with local musicians in workshops and also one-to-one to help them with any playing related pain or discomfort. Two thirds of working musicians have reported living with chronic pain. The Alexander Technique teaches a better approach of how to organise your body and help improve your movement skills. It's taught in all major music colleges as well used by celebrities. I'm currently offering discounted private lessons until the end of January and intend to organise workshops and group work in the next few months. If you are interested, or want to discuss AT then just contact me. Dan https://www.sheffieldalexandertechnique.com/
  2. Hi, my name is Dan Parr and I have recently started teaching the Alexander Technique (AT) in Sheffield. AT is a method of using your body in a more natural way, of unlearning unconscious habits. It has been proven in clinical trials to help with chronic back and neck pain. The results of a large study into back pain published in the British Medical Journal showed that when a person took 24 AT lessons, even after a year went by they recorded a drop in chronic pain from 21 days to 3 days. There was no change for those who had GP led care. If you are interested in finding a better way to use your body, please check out my website and contact me sheffieldalexandertechnique.com
  3. Sung Wing Chun teach traditional Chinese Kung fu in the Ecclesall area of Sheffield on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. *We are looking for students who have the time and motivation to learn a unique art which not only includes close quarter fighting, but how to use your body in the most relaxed and efficient manner possible. This approach to learning has benefits which will improve how you move in your daily life, how you think and how you react in stressful situations. If you are interested please check out our website for details. * Sungwingchun-sheffield.com* We are having a free Introductory session at 8pm on Thursday 10 September. *Check out the website for further information.
  4. I teach a martial art where the emphasis is on maintaining mindfulness at all times within your movement. The purpose of this is that the human body has a great ability to produce relaxed, elastic and efficient power with little effort, as long as we let go ofour thoughts and habits and get out of the way. It is not easy, but it is fascinating to take control by relinquishing our habitual responses and letting go. There is no mystery to this, but it has to be learned by a combination of solo practice and touch from an experienced teacher (similar to the Alexander Technique). It is a fantastic martial art (the external form was practiced by Bruce Lee) but also has application for all movement in life as efficient movement takes the strain off our bodies. Please check out our website and contact me if you are interested. http://www.sungwingchun-sheffield.com sungwingchun@mail.com
  5. I am pretty sure he is still there, I know quite a few people who used to train with him.I think one of his students set up a flash website for him and then left and it was taken down.
  6. Now that the weather is picking up, myself and a few friends are planning to practice chi sau in Endcliffe Park next Sunday (19 April) at 9.30am. If you have some wing chun experience come along, and if not still come and you can see what it is about and ask any questions you might have. We will be near the playground so if anyone wants to bring their kids they can be close by. If you are not sure what wing chun is, check out my website. http://www.sungwingchun-sheffield.com
  7. Check out Sung Wing Chun. No high kicks, reliance on brute strength or aggression. Scientific training in a friendly informal enviroment. http://www.sungwingchun-sheffield.com
  8. Sung Wing Chun is having a free introductory class on 12 March 2015 for new students. It does not matter if you have not practiced wing chun before, we have students new to the art and others who have come to us with decades of experience. We have a unique teaching system that allows our students to experience producing astonishing relaxed power, with little effort. * It has to be experienced to be understood so we are offering this free session so you can feel it for yourself. The classes are held in a fun and friendly way and are a great way to meet new people. We teach in S11 Sheffield, check out our website for address and contact details - * http://www.sungwingchun-sheffield.com The introductory class is being held at Ecclesall Parish Hall, Ringinglow Road at 8.05pm to 9.30 on Thursday 12 March.*
  9. I am wondering if any tai *chi *practitioners are interested in developing their pushing hands skill and the application of their art? *The majority of tai chi practitioners I have touched hands with have been relaxed and had good internal alignment, however they were lacking in experience, sensitivity and how to focus their body mass to a none compliant partner. Conversely many wing chun people are relatively sensitive but lack relaxed power and internal connection. At Sung Wing Chun we have developed a teaching method to help practitioners develop internal alignment, produce power with little effort and apply that power in practice. This is not about sensitivity at the wrist or drilled movements, it is about whole body connection. This methodology of teaching is such that this can be applied to other martial arts, in particular internal martial arts. *If you are interested come along to a class (the first one is free) on a Tuesday or Thursday and check out our website. http://www.sungwingchun-sheffield.com
  10. If you are thinking of getting into a new activity for the New Year, Sung Wing Chun is starting a new class on Tuesday nights from 6 January 2015 near Endcliffe Park. Wing Chun is a martial art famed for its efficiency, directness and economy of movement, but our training goes further in the study of how the body works; by focusing on relaxation students learn to utilise the weight of their body in striking, at the same time developing sensitivity and speed. The *classes are suitable for adults, whatever your level of fitness, the first one is free and thereafter it is £5 or £10 if you attend both cases in the same week. * Full details are on our website, beginners and experienced practitioners are all welcome. http://www.sungwingchun-sheffield.com
  11. I've recently starting teaching a new Wing Chun Martial Arts class at Eccelsall Parish Halls on Thursdays at 8.05pm. Wing Chun is different to the majority of martial arts taught in the area, there are no high kicks or rolling around on the floor, the emphasis is on using relaxation, body alignment and structure to develop power. Because of this it is suitable for men and women of any age. Wing Chun is famed for its efficiency, directness and economy of movement as a fighting art, but our training goes further in the study of how the body works; by focusing on relaxation students learn to utilise the weight of their body in striking, at the same time developing sensitivity and speed. Please check out our website, or even better come on down and see but feel what we do. After the first free lesson classes are every Thursday, £6 pay as you go, and there are no membership or grading fees (ever).* http://www.sungwingchun-sheffield.com
  12. When I tell someone I practice the martial art of Wing Chun, I usually get a reply along the lines of 'I used to do Karate but it did my knees in', or 'I have not had the time for judo since I had kids and I cannot be bothered with being thrown on the floor by someone 20 years younger'. I have practised with a lot of Karate and judo people who once exposed to Wing Chun have been able to adapt rapidly to what is a principle based martial art. It allows you to train with limited risk of injury, and by increasing your body awareness it can improve your posture and the health of your spine. It is also a highly effective self defence method that can be practised by anyone no matter their size. If you are interested, check out our website. We have a new class at Ecclesall Parish Halls and new and experienced students are always welcome. The first class is free. http://www.sungwingchun-sheffield.com
  13. Thommo, Historically tai chi was known as a powerful and effective martial art, however the emphasis on teaching in the UK is nowadays focused on health and the fighting aspects have been lost. Our wing chun shares some similar principles on developing relaxed power, but it is a lot more practical with the emphasis on applying and dealing with force. Looking forward to meeting you. ---------- Post added 19-11-2014 at 12:17 ---------- Just a reminder that the first class/demo is tomorrow evening (Thursday 20 November) at 8.05. Come along and give it a try for free.
  14. I am starting a new Wing Chun Martial Arts class at Eccelsall Parish Halls on Thursday 20th November at 8.05pm. The first lesson will be completely free and will involve demonstrations and an explanation of what we have to offer. Our Wing Chun is different to the majority of martial arts taught in the area, there are no high kicks or rolling around on the floor, the emphasis is on using relaxation, body alignment and structure to develop power. Because of this it is suitable for men and women of any age. After the first free lesson classes are every Thursday, £6 pay as you go, and there are no membership or grading fees (ever). http://www.sungwingchun-sheffield.com ---------- Post added 09-11-2014 at 13:46 ---------- Hi , I have recently uploaded a video to youtube of one of our instructors Mark Ho giving a demonstration of how he transfers his body mass when striking. It is a great demo and explanation, but if you want to experience what it feels like come down on 20 November at 8.05pm.
  15. Mimi83, Wing chun was said to have been invented by a woman, but if you look at most videos on YouTube you would not really think so. I am starting a new class teaching Wing Chun at Ecclesall Parish Halls on Thursday 20th November. There will a free demo and lesson and we will be able to answer any questions you have. The method we teach is entirely suitable for women as it relies on relaxation and proper use of body mass. Check out our website http://www.sungwingchun-sheffield.com
  16. I've been trying to organise a regular gathering for wing chun practitioners, and maybe those who have not practiced in a while, but it seems it is difficult to find people willing to train outside their regular class environment. If anyone is interested in meeting up on Sunday nights, with a group of 10-12 friendly people of varying experience, please PM me. Thanks
  17. These guys are brilliant, their leader Luke came and did a demo for us at my wing chun group, he was excellent. http://www.the-exiles.org.uk/
  18. Different Dan, we train 8pm to 10pm ---------- Post added 11-09-2014 at 23:35 ---------- It would be good to meet and train with people of different lineages. The best thing about these meetings is there is such an open atmosphere that after a bit of rolling people stop and discuss what is working, what is not and generally share experience. Chi sau is not fighting, it is a means to help discover how to use your body effectively to control and hit, if approached property.
  19. I have recently been involved in organising a group of wing chun practitioners who want to practice chi sau outside of a formal class environment. We are a group of about 20 with varying experience (1 year to 12 years+) coming from different lineages. The format is that we meet fortnightly on Sundays (usually 10 -15 of us), we have a good sized hall in Sharrow and we train for 2 hours. The first part of the meet usually involves a demo from one of the group, we are very lucky as apart from having at least 2 qualified wing chun instructors, we have back belts in quite a few styles. Upcoming demos include BJJ, fiore dagger techniques, TKD kicking and also aspects of wing chun. Thereafter we roll and swap partners after 10-15 minutes. We usually get to practice with 5-6 people in a night. If have some wing chun experience and are interested please PM me. We are not after any bullies, big egos or lineage obsessives who want to impose their style, it is a friendly group with a great buzz throughout the night. It is NOT a fight club. I am interested if there are also tai chi, Yi quan practitioners out there who want to try 'sticking'. At the moment we only charge enough to cover the cost of the venue - £3 each. Dan
