  1. There is no possibility of Network Rail allowing tram track on their land as they have plans to meet the current known demand and the Sheffield station south access. The unknown HS2 requirements will also need to be factored in.

The closed stations cannot be reopeneded as stopping would reduce capacity.

The reason these stations closed was lack of use as they did not serve populated areas- even less now.

Extending from Herdings Park to Norton/Meadowhead/Low Edges is feasable but has been rejected by the Government.

If the TramTrain is successful sections could be used but would still require massive investment in street running and overbridges.

These local stations closed 50 years ago, circumstances have changed since then, no one is suggesting that Heeley, Beauchief, Millhouses and Ecclesall are reinstated as they were previously. To suggest that the current areas aren't populated is IMHO wrong.

We have two very congested routes in to Sheffield from the South (A61 & A621) a tram, tram/train extension would be an ideal alternative.

However we need a council/ government that is willing to push this forward.

  2. Sheffield suburban stations were never busy despite being surrounded by housing and or industry.

They never had a frequent clock-face timetable partly because of demand and partly because of interference with profitable traffic.

    Most of these closed pre-Breeching.

These stations also did not carry people to the city centre, the trams and later buses did/do.

If tram trains work then they can run on current routes and on new sections which actually have a demand.

So a route from Treeton Waverley Woodhouse Nunnery City becomes an option.

Repeated over the country tram trains could be a way forward.

There is absolutely no business case to reopen stations on current mainlines such as Millhouses or Heeley as there is even less demand now than when they were closed. In a similar way there is no business case to spend tens of millions on a railway service from Stocksbridge to Sheffield city centre.

There is a case for large P&R stations on the main routes out of Sheffield but it would require cooperation between many private companies and public bodies.

A car park behind a few houses in Oughtibridge with poor road links with an hourly DMU service trundling down to Victoria and back is not in any way a solution to the problem of getting people and stuff around.

Sorry Annie, I disagree, the previous demand for the Dore and Totley,Millhouses, Heeley and Abbeydale stations might have been poor...but these stations were closed over 50 years ago, all closed like many nationwide because of the Beeching Cuts.

The demand for an alternative method of transport to the already congested roads ( A61,A621) in to the city centre from the South of Sheffield is far greater than before.

Tram Train would be ideal for this and would improve transport links from the South of the City...sadly I can't see this happening not with the Council we have at present.

Other Cities have expanded their tram network, unfortunately we look like getting rid of ours.

  3. My late father used to live on Alderson Place off Bramall Lane, he used to tell me about what he called a " Drinks Shop " which sold Sarsaparilla and other soft drinks.

I remember him saying it was either on Bennett Street and or London Road, ( I wish I had paid more attention to him when he was alive).

My father played football in the 1940's for a junior team called Highfield Amateurs of which the owner of the Drinks shop was the manager, they used to meet up at this shop prior to playing.

I have a team picture of them from 1942 ish, taken in front of the pavilion at Bramall Lane.

I'd be interested if anyone could help with any info.

    Cheers

    Jack

  4. Whilst still waiting for an answer on which players Wednesday have spent "ridiculous amounts" of money on.....i noticed Middlesbrough have paid £14m for Brett Assombalonga from Forest....now that is a ridiculous amount of money...

I agree £14m for Assombalonga is ridiculous, however players are only worth what clubs are prepared to pay for them.

The problem is weekly wages which players are demanding, I dread to think what the wage bill is at SWFC. For once we have a chairman who is happy to put his hand in his pocket.

  5. Some great memories on here thank you, My own are from the 34 route from Graves Park.

My first year as an apprentice was spent at the EITB on Petre Street, the 34 was ideal as it meant not having to change buses in town.

I used to catch the bus at the stop near the Prince of Wales pub on Derbyshire Lane with my late father, front seat on the top deck was our chosen seat (so Dad could have a smoke)

I remember the route well, the right turn from Derbyshire Lane on to Norton Lees Lane, the route through the Hollythorpe estate, the bus roof catching the overhanging branches from the trees.

The tight turns seemed much better than any fairground ride.

Then there is the terminus at Graves Park, the bus stop just before the bend at Hemsworth road which was alighting only. The bus stop long since gone, but the strip of tarmac is still there on the pavement.

Also still there on the bend of Hemsworth road/Derbyshire lane is the green pole which used to have a clock fixed to the top.

The clock is no longer there but the bracket which held it is still there, next time anyone drives past have a look.

The 34 bus has some happy memories for me.
