Sheffield is the home of pioneering electronic acts and labels including The Human League, Heaven 17, Cabaret Voltaire, Clock DVA and Warp Records — and this legacy inspires a week of creative beer collaborations, events and experiences across the city.

Living – A New Sheffield Play by Leo Butler (Playhouse)A sweeping Sheffield story about love, time and everything life throws at us
Set in Sheffield and spanning six turbulent decades, Living is a powerful new state-of-the-nation drama from award-winning local playwright Leo Butler (Redundant), produced by Sheffield Theatres.
It’s 1969.
Kathy and Brian are just twenty years old when they move into a big old house on Burngreave Road. They’ve got babies on the way, big hopes for the future, and a sense that life is just beginning.
But living is a funny business.
Sixty years. One home. A lifetime of change.
As the years roll on, the couple face the realities of:
Raising children
Juggling money and work
Holding relationships together
Watching politics and society shift around them
From Thatcherism to Blairism, and into the age of Trump, the world keeps turning. The question is whether Kathy and Brian can keep their family — and their home — together through it all.
As one line puts it:
“Grow up wantin’ to change the world. Spend yer twenties n’thirties in a daze. Fifty turns to sixty n’yer suddenly fightin’ the urge not to kill everyone.”
Why this production matters
Rooted firmly in Sheffield life, Living is:
A deeply human portrait of love, compromise and endurance
A reflection on how personal lives intersect with political change
A celebration of ordinary people navigating extraordinary times
This is a play about all the years of our lives — tender, funny, angry, and painfully recognisable.

Dvořák Piano Quintet – Ensemble 360 (Upper Chapel, Sheffield)A richly lyrical evening of piano and strings in Sheffield
Ensemble 360 brings a beautifully shaped programme to Upper Chapel, opening and closing with Czech-inspired lyricism and placing a striking contemporary work at its heart.
This concert celebrates the expressive possibilities of piano and strings, culminating in Antonín Dvořák’s much-loved Piano Quintet No.2 — one of the great chamber music finales, brimming with warmth, dance-like rhythms, and folk-inflected joy.
The programme
Josef Suk – Piano Trio
A lyrical, late-Romantic work that sets the tone with warmth and melodic generosity.
Lili Boulanger – D’un matin de printemps
A ravishing, fleeting portrait of spring, full of lightness and colour.
Michael Zev Gordon – Piano Quintet ‘Kintsugi’
A delicate and enchanting work, co-commissioned by Music in the Round Sheffield and Presteigne Festival. Inspired by the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold, the piece reflects on fragility, resilience and beauty.
Antonín Dvořák – Piano Quintet No.2
A joyful conclusion to the evening, weaving Czech folk influence with lyrical sweep and irresistible energy.
Why this concert stands out
This thoughtfully curated programme moves from Romantic lyricism to contemporary reflection, before finishing with one of chamber music’s most uplifting masterpieces — all performed by one of Sheffield’s most admired ensembles in the intimate acoustic of Upper Chapel.
