View Full Version : Car advice Clio with Immobiliser problems
Sallylizzie 07-07-2010, 11:07 Hi,
I have a 2000 W reg Clio and basically I have an immobiliser problem and the car won't start.
It's currently at a garage who have suggested getting a new key from the dealer (very expensive), but I've been told it's possible to have the immobiliser disabled. Does anyone know who can do this?
Also I've heard it is possible that the ECU can be changed (please bare with my I am not mechanically minded and am just repeating what I have been told). I have seen a site online where I can get a new one but I've been told by one person they are very hard to change (and expensive) and another that it's a pretty easy job and shouldn't cost too much.
Anyway, I'd really appreciate any advice anyone has.
Thank you
andyrad29 07-07-2010, 11:17 cheaper to get a new key then sell the car and dont buy french ever again!
Give Jim Parks a call he did mine in 10 mis £45.00 hes in the Yellow pages under Car Tuning.
Jim ill fix it....
Sallylizzie 07-07-2010, 11:20 LOL!
Wish I could it's been nothing but problems since I bought it and I'd lay money on the scrap man wanting ME to pay HIM to take it away :-)

Did he fit a new ECU? sorry if that sounds dumb :hihi: or disable to immobiliser?
andyrad29 07-07-2010, 11:22 I can never understand people buying french cars, they are well known for dodgy electrics.

that would be just to reproggramme the key i would imagine

That can't be done, ok here's where I appear really clueless but.... something that's been done to to car means the key can't be reprogrammed 2 auto electrician have looked at it and it appears something has been removed behind the steering column that prevents the reprogramming of the key.

sounds like you are being fobbed off to me, was it working before? have you removed anything? have you paid these two "auto electricians"?
Sallylizzie 07-07-2010, 11:43 I've had problems with is starting since I bought it in Feb, there's always been a knack to getting it started and I did a bit of searching and from reading I suspected it was the immobiliser.
The garage where it is, is extremally reliable and have no reason to suspect the garage is wrong in what they say. It is a cat C write off and I've had nothing but problems with it since I got it.
As for the electricians, I haven't paid anything, the garage (where my car was towed on Monday) got them in and I haven't/won't be charged for their service. I've not removed a thing, I wouldn't even know how to, all I can do is a basic tyre change/pressure check and put new oil in, this is where my mechanical talents stop.
andyrad29 07-07-2010, 11:48 if it was a cat C then say no more. cut your losses and get rid, you should have stayed clear if it wasnt right to start with
Sallylizzie 07-07-2010, 11:55 I realise that now, unfortunately i bought the car when I was desperate (no car, no work = no pay!) I went on my own, and drove it and didn't really have a clue, all my own fault and lesson heavily learnt. He explained it was cat C but told me it wasn't a big deal and I have a whole service history from when the car was made.
I've just swallowed all the repairs I've had to have done since I got it but not sure where the immobiliser comes into it. I'm in a position where I can't be without a car, can't afford a newer one (for a least 6 months), and can't afford to chuck good money after bad so need to make the best of a bad situation, hence me hoping I can get the immobiliser disabled.

just a thought but try JS services on meadowbank road in Rotherham they are Renault specialists and may be able to do something for you. I have had a cat d car before which is minor write off but cat c is a worse write off and needs a special test when its put back on the road, I dont think you will get much back if you ever sell it.

No he just plugged, what looked like a big calculator into a lead under the dash, and typed in the model and year, then hey presto the car started.
Got to be worth a try, call him and explain your situation, and he will give you a quote over the phone.
Good look
Sallylizzie 07-07-2010, 12:11 Thanks for the suggestion. Rotherham might be too far as it's more than likely I would need someone to come to the car as it won't drive, and it's in Heely at the moment
I'd never try and sell this car, It's not worth much and I couldn't sell it on given the trouble I've had. It just wouldn't be right.
Thanks

From what the garage have told me this has been tried. Many thanks for your reply though

but there are many different machines to do programming etc, have they got the correct one? give the suggested guy a call, i have heard he is very good too
Sallylizzie 07-07-2010, 12:42 I've no idea to be fair, cos they looked at it at the garage where it currently is.
I'm going to have the immobiliser disabled, I've been recommended a company that can do this so the garage are going to take out the ECU I'll send it off to them and then the garage will put it back in.
Grrr I hate this car can't wait till I can get another one.
Thank you so much for your help

justmeglynn 07-07-2010, 20:30 Hi
I can disable the immo in your ecu. I am in rotherham and would require the ecu only. I suspect the ecu is a Safir type and takes 2 or 4 hours to disable using my equipment. Ive done quite a few Renault ecus dashes kecards etc. I work self employed repairing car related electronics, including radio repair and decoding (been doing this work for over 25years now, working for some of the big companies.
Pm me if youre interested (same day service)
