Volunteer needed to teach disability drum group

It is with a very heavy heart that I have to announce that, due to personal medical reasons, I am forced to give up teaching A-Plus DrumLine. I have been afflicted with osteoarthritis in both hands for some time now and in recent months it has shown significant deterioration. Although I have had some treatment with mixed success, my medical advice is that I cease drumming activities.

 

It is with much regret that I take this decision as, since the group was form...ed in 2014, I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching this enthusiastic group of young adults and taking them to perform at various local events including the opening ceremony of the UK Special Olympics in 2017. I shall very much miss their friendliness and keenness to learn.

 

I am now urgently seeking a volunteer to take over teaching this group. They are young adults with a range of autistic and other disadvantages – some are independent and some are escorted by carers (of whom a few will get actively involved). The group rehearses just once per week – currently on Tuesdays from 5.00 to 6.00 pm at the Autism Plus headquarters in central Sheffield. The post does not require any special talent in drumming, nor music, nor teaching – I am living proof of that. What it does demand is regular commitment, patience and a sense of fun and enjoyment of drumming in a very basic corps style.

The group has a very good set of Premier drums (snare, bass and tenor) all with stands and access to a basic drum kit. There is contact with and advice available from Free Players Drum Corps of New York who were the inspiration for the formation of A-Plus. There is also a close link with Concord Youth Music in Sheffield.

These young people thoroughly enjoy their weekly sessions and deserve the opportunity to continue their progress and pleasure through the medium of drumming. I sincerely hope that we can find someone to help them as soon as possible.
