Hi Dave mantis

I know a lot about the tournament. I will be there reffing. RE: The name "university" it is not an actual university event :hihi: :hihi: , that is either a marketing ploy OR the fact that it is based at a university. As a matter of fact there will be no university clubs there to be honest.

All in all there are divisions for Semi contact (points sparring) , Katas and forms of all types Chinese , Japanese and Korean. Also there is Chambara which is a lighthearted version of some form of stick fighting I think.

I will be running the Light continuous division which is a very good precursor to real Kickboxing. All the judges and referees for the continuous sparring division will have a good understanding of Kickboxing as opposed to many of the "mickey mouse" tournaments where they have idiots who dont understand the rules or the scoring.

I cant comment for the rest of the tournament but the Light Continuous is bound to be excellent as I am running it.

Thanks for the input a couple of my junior students wanted to have a go at the weapons and hand forms division. To see what it is like before they starts training for the British Chinese Martial Arts Comp later this year. I think they thought it would be a good starting point to see what they are letting themselves in for lol.

So you never know I might see you there.

There will be a few clubs at the forms divisions, weapons wise watch out for "sheffield dragons" easily the best forms club in sheffield (well apart from Brian Becks that is). They specialise in creative and musical forms I believe and it is their tournament too.

I will be in the other room with the adults Light Continuous so come and say hello. I will be the Chief Referee for the Continuous. Do any of your seniors do Full Contact or Continuous Fighting?

Quite, quite shameless.

Do you have any more information or could you point me in the direction of a website with more details (I couldn't find any when I searched, I'm afraid).

For example, what time is the kick-off, and is there any charge for spectators?

I think it starts in the morning.

Id say 11am to be safe.

They normally charge the following:

Competitors £12 (in advance , if you pay late there is a £10 entry fee)

Spectators £6

Id be a bit dubious of the so called "Team Great Britain Selections" hype though.

Last time i entered a team into the Light Continuous division we cleaned up most of the divisions Stopping most of the opponents by TKO and we didnt get invited to any "world championships"

I cant comment on the standard of the semi contact and forms divisions as I dont get involved in those disciplines at all. Especially not semi contact points. Kata and Forms are ok for traditional disciplines Id say but Semi contact point fighting is a bad joke and needs killing off in my opinion.

Im a real Anti Semi contact Nazi :P .

There is a good reason for my views. Referees score points for all kind of crap techniques one time i saw an open hand slap to the face scored! Also the nature of the system is such that it encourages poor defense.

Generally there is little or no ettiquette and respect in Semi and the fighters and coaches act like football hooligans if their techniques arent scored.

In all honesty though the above behaviour is generally echoed by a lot of the "Freestyle karate" and the modernised "kung fu" systems than by Taekwondo or Traditional Karate stylists. Karate and Taekwondo tend to emphasise discipline and respect a lot more than this new "sport karate" or whatever else they choose to call themselves these days.

The "fighters" tend to talk a lot of rubbish as well. One semi contact fighter was telling me how she regularly beats up Thai boxers, has had 15 Full contact fights (I had not heard of any of the promoters/venues/opponents,..etc she mentioned) and how Thaiboxers in thailand "bought their titles" .

I am now of the opinion that "martial artificial" breeds lack of respect, poor ettiquette and weak spirit.

I think I will get off my soapbox now :D

Any semi contact afficianado who doesnt like what I say can respond on here or voice your displeasure in a more personal way if you please.

Hey Davemantis!

November you say? I will gladly put your guys on as I am hoping to promote a Full Contact show then. Hopefully I should have the infamous Freddylee having a Full Contact bout then.

Freddy fights at 70kg and will only fight if leg kicks are allowed (without the shinpads is preffered). As an adult he is a novice but he has had a few junior bouts.

If you can help us out that would be great it would also be good publicity for your club too.
