Toseland Haulage

Recommended Posts

I am trying to find information about a firm of Haulage Contractors operating in Sheffield by Mrs A Toseland, known to be on Woodside Lane in 1939. The comapny later became Toseland Haulage Ltd. based at Orgreave but went out of business mid 1980's.

All information welcome, thank you.

Hi Brunobel - welcome to the Forum!.:)

Looking in local Kelly's directories, the 1974 directory (the last published) lists "R.G. Toseland" of Foley Street, Sheffield S4 7YU under haulage contractors. In earlier directories, the 1931 edition shows "George Toseland, carting contractor" at 14 Apple Street. By 1936 (when the 1937 directory was compiled) the Apple Street business was in the name of "Mrs Annie Phoebe Toseland" and the 1942 directory no longer mentions the firm. The 1925 directory shows "Samuel Wheatcroft, carting contractor" at 14 Apple Street, so presumably George Toseland took over this business sometime between 1924 and 1930. The street-by-street or classified sections of the directories I have from 1925 onwards make no mention of the Toseland firm on Woodside Lane.

Public records show an Annie P. Toseland who died in Sheffield in Jan-Mar 1952, aged 70; she was evidently the Annie Phoebe Brady who married George W. Toseland in 1899. The 1901 census finds George, a "carter", and Annie lodging with a family at 62 Dunlop Street. By 1911 they had their own home and business at 10 Salmon Street, where they lived with their three surviving children and several relatives. George Toseland died in 1948, aged 69.

Just another snippet - the R.G. Toseland mentioned in the 1974 directory was presumably Ronald Gordon Toseland, born 5 April 1924, resident at 5 Crowland Road, S5 in 1973, died Apr-Jun 1999.

Thank you again - R G Toseland is the man who owned Toseland Haulage Ltd, the company that went out of business in the mid 1980's

You may be interested to know that I have found a Will for Annie Phoebe Toseland - she left just over £2000, was living at 72 Wade Street and died 14 03 1952.
