First Time Camper - Advice & Tips?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

Basically, I feel like my head is going to explode if I don't get a bit of peace and quiet :) so I'm thinking of taking a couple of days out at the end of August, just to get away from it all.

I've never been camping before, but really fancy the idea of pitching a tent somewhere and being able to have a wander around without too many people around.

Basically, what will I need? Haha. I really am clueless.

I don't drive, so I've been looking for sites near to train stations or bus routes. I've sort of fell in love with the idea of this place http://www.beechcroftfarm.co.uk/ plus, it looks like it's on the 65 bus route from Sheffield to Buxton, which would be ideal.

Would this kind of tent be ok for a couple of nights in August? http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9152784.htm

I know I'll need a sleeping bag, but what else? I was just going to bring a couple of books, and have a quiet couple of days reading and walking around. Foodwise, I'm thinking of relying on the local pubs.....

I just wasn't sure if I was missing out any 'essential' items I might need!

You will also need an air bed or roll mat (unless you are ok with hard cold floors), at least a headtorch for lighting, and waterproof jacket. I would also take a cheap single stove (£10 or so) and kettle as a cup of tea never tastes better than when made outside your tent first thing in the morning.

have fun!

I personally don't bother with air beds any longer. Instead I take a spare sleeping bag (for underneath the main one) and a roll mat or yoga mat. I have camped loads of times by motorcycle and car. Being well organised and packing well you can get lots of stuff including a folding garden chair.

A chair is an important consideration. Most of us spend the majority of our waking life sat down and if you spend a few days in a tent with nothing to sit on you could find it very tiring.
