SpeedDemon
Ok so this may sound a really stupid question to those of you who use this. I don't get the need for the clicker or what it does. From my understanding, u would give the command, then click & treat. Soooo, why not just treat? As in, what does the clicker actually do?
Daid
Ok so this may sound a really stupid question to those of you who use this. I don't get the need for the clicker or what it does. From my understanding, u would give the command, then click & treat. Soooo, why not just treat? As in, what does the clicker actually do? The sound is unmistakable and can be delivered quickly. The dog will associate the sound with the treat and respond accordingly as the training progresses. Treating will eventually disappear but the clickers message will still be delivered and from distance too. The clicker will be the cue that something good will come the dogs way and only when you're satisfied that the dog has completed your request to your liking will you use the clicker. In effect. Not only can you teach the dog to 'sit' but you can teach it too sit quickly. Something like that anyway.
cparsons
You wouldn't give a command then click then treat. You use the clicker to train the command! We use the click as a marker. Basically if you were teaching a dog to sit the normal way, you might actually end up giving the treat when the dog has jumped up or isn't doing the action you want it to. With clicker training, the dog learns that the action he was performing at the exact moment you clicked is what you're after. I hope that makes sense. I really enjoy doing free shaping with my dogs. You can see them trying to work out what you want them to do. Sharky123
Clicker Training can be used to train Dogs, Horses and other types of animals and yes it does work For anyone seriously interested, the ClickerExpo event is coming to the UK in October 2014. http://www.positiveanimalsolutions.com/ClickerExpo_s/2084.htm It will be a sell out but the knowledge gained will be great.
