  1. In addition to the City Council elections, PCC elections and referendum (has there actually been any sort of campaign for the existing "strong leader" model?) there are 4 Parish Council by elections in Ecclesfield following the disintegration of the group of "independent" councillors elected in 2019.

2 of the councillors who resigned are standing in the by-elections they caused and the literature from the 2 warring factions of independents seems focused on flinging mud at each other. One of said factions consists entirely of people involved with (and focused wholly on) Chapeltown market, which is a very unhealthy situation when you stop and think about all the other businesses and voluntary groups in the local area.  We don't need any branch of government, no matter how junior made subservient to the whims of one business.

Reporting today that Barnsley, like Leicester, Bradford, Oldham and Rochdale, has a large south Asian population.

    Full marks for inaccuracy.

The kneejerk reaction of a lot of racists on social media was to blame asians.  There were plenty of people ignoring the inconvenient truth that Barnsley has a very low number of asians before the Daily Fail picked up on that line.

  3. Plans are being made to give Chapeltown Market a revamp and a rebranding. Future plans are on the below website

Taking over the old Chapeltown Market which hogs the corner of Market Street between the WMC and the railway line, the new development – featuring a large number of recycled shipping containers which will be spread over two levels in places – is planned to open for business in January 2021. Its vibe will be a little different from the rest of Chapeltown, and really is more that just a market…

Championing a sense of community, TRAXX is looking to bring together responsible retailers and flagship dining concepts in a recycled space. The street market’s shipping containers will be filled to the brim with artists, designers and retailers. Each container space will eventually be allocated to a business and there will also be opportunities to launch pop-up shops and new business ventures.

Alongside all of this, the new market will also feature a plethora of street food traders and we hope to explore other ideas such as community-led rooftop garden for people to enjoy.

Market will be open on Saturday 4th July with plenty of new stalls. Hoping that this is a success and will get more people visiting Chapeltown.

The "messaging service" is called Parler and appears to be a right wing version of Twitter.

Personally I think there's plenty of other right wing websites all chasing after the same market of far right types looking for an echo chamber so I fail to see the point of it.

Marmite has been forced to temporarily stop producing large jars of spread as pub closures indirectly resulted in a scarcity of brewers yeast.

The spread, made with yeast extract, is now only being produced in a 250g size jar as a result of brewers' yeast being more difficult to get hold of amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to a message sent on the company's official Twitter account on Wednesday.

When asked by a customer why larger 400g squeezy jars were tough to get hold of at the moment, the firm replied: "Due to brewers yeast being in short supply (one of the main ingredients in Marmite) Supplies of Marmite have been affected.

Probably better without it! Planners just throw grit into the cogs of development and create ghettos.

Central government may have ordered Sheffield City Council to build x many new houses. That's certainly the situation North East Derbyshire council found themselves in. Complete with local conservatives leading the charge against what Conservatives in Westminster had ordered North East Derbyshire council to do!

  7. Having moved into Sheffield from Dronfield (where the North East Derbyshire local plan has generated a great deal of controversy) last year I fully expect this to become a major issue in  Sheffield local politics.

Councillor Bob McCann spoke about the delays to the blueprint at a recent planning and highways meeting.

He said: “It really matters, it’s not just about the housing it’s about the whole infrastructure. It’s about time this local area plan was published, at least for consultation if nothing else.

“I remember it being mentioned when I was last on the council in 2014/15. It was actually being mentioned in planning terms then and it’s not here yet. It’s supposed to be a 20-year plan but if you’re going to take 20 years to produce it it’s going to be out of date by the time you get it finished. Developers are coming up with plans that don’t really fit anything the city wants. I’m not saying they are all bad plans but there doesn’t seem to be any control over it.

Sheffield Council said it would publish a draft last year but as yet this has not materialised. It now aims to issue the document by the end of this year. The plan will determine what can and cannot be developed in each part of the city up to 2034.

Biggest problem with 'Tarn is the drug problem. Spice I believe is the drug of choice. I have to use the bank in Barnsley now our local bank has closed, and it's a real eye opener, folk laid comatose on the footpaths (bottom of market hill) with Police, First Responder and Ambulances , yes two of them in attendance just for druggies. The sight of these comatose individuals laid prostrate on the ground is a regular event, pictures are often shown on face ache book. The comments posted cannot be put on here for obvious reasons, language.

So that rules out Barnsley for me, sorry 'tarn.

    Angel1.

Sheffield is not without those issues. Seen it a few times in the area around the old Castle Market. 🙁

It didn't even make to win Britain's Favourite Market category..... that went to Shrewsbury.

For all Leeds faults, it's got a superb indoor market that puts both Sheffield and Barnsley to shame.

Living in Stockbridge I find it easier and cheaper to shop in Barnsley, the town centre of Barnsley is undergoing a major refit at the moment the main market is being transformed along with most of the surrounding area .

Sheffield by comparison feels old-fashioned, threadbare and unwelcoming the recent moving of the market down the moor goes against the wishes of many locals, Barnsley has built a new small market along side the old one while redevelopment takes place.

Sheffield a city on the move ,yes downhill.

To be honest, I wouldn't choose Barnsley town centre over Fox Valley retail park in Stocksbridge.

Thank you for correcting me.  I obviously misunderstood what was being said on the news.

I'm afraid I don't always trust what they tell you on the news these days.

Also worth noting that Streatham went very heavily for Remain in the 2016 referendum so if you don't like a Streatham MP standing up for what his constituents want then tough.

I agree he is the worse example of a serving MP and will be the worse Lib Dem MP since Lembit Opik

Also completely wrong. John Hemming was much worse before he was voted out. And many Liberal Democrats would quite like Jess Phillips, the Labour MP who replaced him to join them as well.

Also, if you want worse sitting MP's then then Chuka Umunna there are many, many worse examples from Jared O'Mara to Priti Patel to Caroline Flint to Mark Francois to Chris Williamson to Dominic Raab.

I heard on the news last night that the seat in the General Election which Chuka won for Labour is a target seat in the next General Election for the Lib Dems.  The Lib Dems came a close second to Labour in that seat.  If there was a by-election now Chuka would almost certainly win that seat for the Lib Dems.  It is not rocket science to work out why Chuka has been keen to join the Lib Dems after the poor performance of  Change/UK which he helped to form in the recent European Elections.

Wrong. Results from the last general election

Use one as a caretaker for a year or two until Chuka has got his feet under the table?

To be honest, I think most Liberal Democrats would still go for somebody like Layla Moran over Chuka Umunna if there were to be another leadership contest further down the road.

Former Labour and Change UK MP Chuka Umunna has joined the Lib Dems.

The Streatham MP told the BBC he had been "wrong" to think "millions of politically homeless people... wanted a new party."

Mr Umunna said he had also "massively underestimated just how difficult it is to set up a fully-fledged new party without an existing infrastructure".

He was one of six Change UK MPs to quit last week, after it gained only 3.4% of the vote in the European elections.

The pro-EU Lib Dems saw a surge in support in the same elections, coming second after the Brexit Party.

There aren't any. Rory Stewart talks a bit of sense, but he's still part of a really toxic government. You look to the opposition and there's not much to inspire you there either. It's awful.

Yep. Rory Stewart is the best of an abysmal, delusional and dishonest bunch.

He doesn't stand a chance as the Tory grassroots are entirely removed from reality and want ideological purity over all other considerations.

Boooooom, the "new" Party has just imploded with half a dozen of the well known "personalities" abandoning it and returning to Parliament as Indipendants again.  Wonder if they will have a bye election this time. No would be my best guess.

    Angel1.

The people in Labour calling for a by election for the ex-Labour MP in Penistone and Stocksbridge are very quiet about the idea of a by election for the ex-Labour MP in Sheffield Hallam for some reason.

Mind you, given their poor showing at recent local and EU elections I can't see our Labour friends piping up about by-elections for defectors quite as readily at present.

  17. Change UK / TIG have split. Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Angela Smith is one of those splitting.

Change UK has lost six of its 11 MPs following a disappointing performance in last month's EU elections, when it failed to get a single MEP elected.

The party announced that a new party leader, Anna Soubry, had been elected.

She said she was "deeply disappointed" that Heidi Allen, Chuka Umunna, Sarah Wollaston, Angela Smith, Luciana Berger and Gavin Shuker had left.

The departing MPs said they would be "returning to supporting each other as an independent grouping of MPs".

Change UK - formerly known as the Independent Group - was formed earlier this year by MPs who quit Labour and the Conservatives.
