  1. Well I would have done the march with you rog I went from the same church and was a train bearer to the May Queen in 1953. I even have a picture of that procession as it was printed in one of the Handsworth books by Sandra Gillot.

I think I have a copy of that photo in 1953. Which one are you?

I too went to Richmond Wesleyan Reform Sunday school and went on the Whit walks, probably c1954-1959. I remember my legs always ached marching up Richmond Road.

Our May Queen was crowned at the May concert which was performed on three nights in May after weeks of rehearsals. (I was always a fairy with no lines to say!) I was an attendant when Jennifer Dixon was queen, and the year after that my sister was Queen Lilac. The queen did have a boy to accompany her, but I can't remember his title. Happy days.

  3. I was brought up on Stradbroke Road and spent many a day in Richmond Park in the 50s and 60s.

My grandad was a keen bowler and won loads of trophies at the bowls club there - his name was Jack Styles.

We used to go and get pussy willow from the stream that runs though the park.

Haven't been there for about 35 years. Sorry - have no pictures. (Had my first cigarette there!)

  4. Does anyone remember Dr Wells and Dr O connel who used to be in the tiny little surgery on the manor top at the side of the library ,it had little wooden benches and a tiny little window at the entrance very often you had to wait outside because you could not get in if it were full:hihi:

Just found this thread. Yes, I remember Dr O Connell and that dreaded waiting room. We used to live at Stradbroke and had to walk all the way to Manor Top to the doctors (had to be fit, just to go there) If we were really poorly mum would take us on the bus, but that was only if we were on our knees!

  5. Sorry to hear about his passing but I should have realized,I guess.

How old was he when he died ?

Think he used to live in the Woodseats area and walked to work.

We used to maintain that having him for a boss was like having extra money in the pay envelope.

Don't know a single soul who had a bad word about him.

May he rest in peace and thank you for the post.

    P.S. welcome to the forum.

Yes, he did live in Woodseats. Nice to hear such good things about him. He was 75 when he died.

  6. I worked at Laycock's in the Cutter Grind Department from 1959 until about 1965. The boss was a guy named Maurice Rogers. He didn't smoke.drink or swear but never tried to impose his beliefs on anyone else. He was a pefect gentleman and an all round nice guy. Don't know whether he's still around or not.

There used to be two guys who worked in the stores, Lou and Ron. who both had one arm missing. They used to delight in getting us younger persons trapped between their stumps. You couldn't move too far when they did that. All in good fun then but would probably be frowned upon nowadays.

Maurice Rogers was my great uncle. I too remember him as being a real gentleman. His passionate hobby was photography and we have loads of family photos taken by him, including my wedding photos which he did as a wedding present. He passed away in 1982.
