Have put Ubuntu netmix on my Acer Aspire 1. It has a hidden 8GB recovery partition for XP. The Ubuntu install resized the main 140GB XP partition to use about 40GB for itself.
If I later use the XP recovery option to restore using the recovery partiton will it erase the Ubuntu completely?

Volume 2 (WEA)
Â
One or two pages on their working lives from about a hundred people.
Covers pre war onwards, fascinating

How hard can it be? Jeremy Clarkson
Volume four of his Sunday Times columns, still disagree with most of what he says but love the way he says it.
-
When Red is Black - Qiu Xiaolong
Detective novel set in China in the 90s. Well written interesting look inside a transitioning country
Â
Atomic Sushi - Simon May
English Professor's diary when teaching at a uni in Tokyo, very funny in part

I need an 8Gb one, already have several but they seem to vary a lot in speed, the Kingston and HP ones seems slowest but all are USB 2 and I would have thought they would be about the same.
Any recommendations?

Might be worth trying a taxi firm, some do jump starts

Yep, I tried reinstalling the driver with it connected direct, the same display modes show.
It dual boots with Ubuntu so I'll see if that differs (apart from three hours of tinkering with xrandr!)
-
It's via the DSub as it has to go into a KVM box
I was hoping to get round an issue with the onboard Nvidia which seem to produce long (about 10 seconds) blanking after logon.

Yes, the monitor definitely has 1920 (it's an LG E2250, I've used it with two other computers at that resolution). I suspect it may be that the older drivers don't support the newer wide screen resolutions
-
Updated my monitor to an LG one that has 1920 by 1080 and bought a ATI Radeon X550 from Ebay but on Windows Vista with the latest AMD ATI drivers and the LG monitor driver the 1920 is not available.
Is the card just too old (it has 512MB which I would have thought was enough)? Do newer ones have better support for 1920? Should I be looking for DX10 ones?
It seems really difficult to find out what resolutions cards support.

It's about a year old, done an average amount of printing but I've only used genuine cartridges.
I was told that essentially an ink jet is a very fine nozzle spraying the ink and therefore the ink itself is filtered to an incredibly fine degree so it doesn't clog the jets, the compatible cartridges are not so they might.

They came in sealed, standard looking canon packaging (there are some official Canon ones on Ebay now that just come in shrink wrap but these were not those).
Hadn't thought of cleaning the head! but stayed the same.

Heard reports about these a while back. Bought some genuine ones from Ebay recently but notice that the blacks on some of my printout has a brownish tinge.
Is my printer showing it's age or is this a sign they might not be the genuine item?

Thanks, posted on their forum and a couple of hours later it was again full speed!
I found the call centre good, was expecting a 10 minute wait but spoke to someone straight away, shame had to us their forum resolve it.

My broadband has dropped from 500KBs to 50. After a day to see if it was a hiccup, I spent an hour on the phone to India (which was actually clear for a change!).
They confirmed it with their speed test (http://www.talktalkmembers.com/content/view/53/124/) then told me I would have to do 8 more tests over two days.
Three days later still the same. I am 2 miles from the exchange and should be getting about 600KBs.
Anyone else had this? how long should it take them?

Thanks, will check out the Fullcirlce mag!
With the increase in Linux's popularity I am beginning to think AV is now an occasional requirement. Will try Avast and BitDefender (gave up trying to install AVG after circular error messages!)
-
Are they required or really just for mail servers?
Any recommendations, both AVG and Avira have free versions but I think command line only
-
Brill, thanks

I have just been given one and any recommendations would be welcome.
I would like a first person shooter and a space shooter if possible with Resident Evil looking like one, but there seem to be four in that series, are they roughly the same with the later ones being more 'polished'?

I recently knocked the plug on my Linux box. When I powered it up it seemed fine, no warnings.
Are there likely to be any repercussions? Anything I can check?
-
Thanks! will check them out

Any recommendations on tools and books?
I have done work on Windows Mobile but in C++, will I need to remember JAVA?
Cheers

Brill, many thanks for the suggestions

I need a small coil spring about an inch long, quarter of an inch wide for a binding machine.
Does anyone know where I can buy one in Sheffield? it seems daft to throw away an otherwise perfect piece of equipment
Ubuntu netmix on Aspire with XP

Thanks SW, I dual booted it, from what you say the recovery partion will assume the whole drive is to be used and will either fail or erase it all.
I should perhaps have gone for the integral Windows Ubuntu install but assumed as XP is fairly slow that would crawl.
