  1. Thanks @SheffieldForum for not (as yet anyway) locking this thread.  I think we all understand (if not in all cases accept) the situation re the Woodbourn Rd incident but I do feel it's natural to be curious (it is our city after all) re the circumstances of the second 'contretemps'.  Whoever was involved (bikers or not, religion or not, drugs or not) it's surely of legitimate interest to be concerned about just WTF was going on there on Saturday evening.

TWO IN CRITICAL CONDITION FOLLOWING BRAWL ON WOODBOURN ROAD ATTERCLIFFE

Please be aware that Woodbourn Road in Sheffield is closed in both directions between the Worthing Road and Parkway Avenue junctions.

This is due to an earlier incident and the closure is expected to remain in place over night and tomorrow.

At 2.25pm today (25 May) we responded to reports of disorder among a group of people at Woodbourn Road.
It is reported that a large group of people were fighting in the street and multiple people have suffered injuries.

Four people have been taken to hospital and two are believed to be in a critical condition. A further eight people are believed to have suffered injuries which are not thought to be life threatening and received treatment at the scene.
It is also reported that a number of vehicles were damaged during the disorder. Multiple arrests have been made on suspicion of violent disorder offences.

Emergency services remain at the scene and officers will continue to remain in the area during the rest of the day.

A cordon is in place at Woodbourn Road between the junctions with Worthing Road and Parkway Avenue. The public are asked to use alternative routes and plan their journeys accordingly. Thank you for your understanding.

For access to the Leisure Centre on Stadium Way please use Broad Oaks.
Anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident and has any information can contact police online or via 101. Please quote incident number 364 of 25 May 2024 when you get in touch.

If they drive the ANPR van up and down the Wicker on a daily basis, particularly in an evening they'd make an absolute fortune. Don't think I've ever not seen people parked illegally in the bus bay heading towards city centre. Same goes for Spital Hill.

Bus companies have constantly complained about it. Personally if I were the bus bosses I'd refused to serve bus stops in these areas till the council pulled their finger out and sorted it.

We all know why the council won't though.....

Seconded. So many times I've seen elderly people / people with pushchairs have to step out into the road to board a bus that cannot pull into the stop (WK2) as intended. There's a huge sense of "entitlement" and perceived invincibility (to park just wherever is most convenient to the driver) in that area. This will only get worse as time progresses.

Yes, I agree. Suspend the bus stop - and post an explanatory notice as to the reasons why.

  4. The always excellent (within the constraints they have to operate within) Burngreave Surgery will indeed close - but will be moving to a new combined premises on Spital Street. Slightly nearer to home for me, just hope the existing staff transfer too.

  5. I prefer the Stagecoach system if paying by card. Takes £1.50 / £2 immediately "in one hit" as opposed to Ticketeer's ridiculous initial 10p then the balance charged a day later. I have "round-up" on my current account so the 10p generates a 90p round-up. The subsequent balancing £1.40 / £1.90 doesn't generate a round-up as it's regarded as part of the same transaction.

Clearly I must be "on the spectrum" to find this annoying - but on shared routes I always aim for a Stagecoach bus for this reason alone!

  6. As a non-driver I do occasionally need to use taxis and find most drivers to be really lovely people.

Whislt walking around I get the impression that the vast majority of cars in and around central Sheffield are taxis (although sometimes possibly 'off-duty' so as to benefit from their ability to use bus/taxi lanes/gates?).  Acknowledge of course that private cars are rightly banned from many central areas so taxis will inevitably be 'over-represented'.

Business must be booming (great news tax-wise for Jeremy Hunt) though as it's often very difficult to book a pick-up from The Hallamshire. Using an app you can see driver after driver (on one recent occasion well into double figures) rejecting the job. Probably understandable given the ridiculous congestion around A Road but still indicative that they can afford to pick and choose,

If it costs him £2 in petrol there and back to the rank and £1 overhead costs (maintenance, insurance etc) plus 10% VAT that's £3.30. £7-£3.30 = £3.70 profit. That's not bad for 10 minutes' work. It's the equivalent of £22.20 per hour, almost double minimum wage.

But if they on return to the station then have to queue on the rank for another hour to get their next fare the hourly rate becomes much less rewarding.

    * I'm not a taxi driver (I can't even drive a car).

  8. The "non-pedalling" (unless police are around) E-bike food delivery 'usual suspects' won't be keeping to the cycle lane.

Almost got knocked down on the pavement on Castlegate yesterday by one of the aforementioned 'usual suspects' on his E-bike - despite the more than adequate cycle lane down there. Perhaps he preferred the better river view from the pavement.

Unfortunately there are 2 areas that need to see enforcement but seem not to be on SCC's radar despite numerous complaints.

    • The box junction on the exit of Meadowhall bus station. Buses regularly struggle to get out due to yellow box contraventions.
    • Blonk St, entering from Wicker. Absolutely prolific illegal turns, usually by taxis

I regularly walk past the Nursery St/Wicker/Blonk St junction and you are 100% correct with that one. Very rare not to see a nybody making this illegal turn (right into Blonk St) and usually taxis as you say.
