  1. Which is what i said in post #3.

Reason for the "slanging match" is one particular poster cannot accept others may have an opinion that differs from his, nothing more nothing less. Don't blame those of us offering good friendly advice. :)

It sure was - I was just wanting to back up your original point as all the bickering may have confused the OP a bit!

I appreciate there are plenty of ignorant morons on this place and not blaming you for anything at all - actually, it's nice to see some nice informed advice on here instead of daft posts like "Windows 8 is horrendous, you are stupid for buying one" or "Downgrade to Windows 7" when there are much better options available such as what you suggested.

I'd do it more myself but it seems my previous posts have been drowned in the middle of other rubbish in the threads!

  2. Christ - why it it every thread on Sheffield Forum, even on the most trivial things, end up in a giant slanging match?

Here's the bottom line OP (suzan): try it out and see how you like it. If you're struggling try one of the programs that can bring back the old fashioned Vista/7 style Start menu like Classic Shell:)

  3. Our 42 inch LG LCD TV is great, we've had it two years now and no problems at all and nice picture quality. I'm sure the £289 one will be fine - it'll certainly beat the usual supermarket own-brand tat versions which usually have poor picture quality and rubbish remote control/EPG software.

  4. On your computer, go to your Start menu, type in 'ncpa.cpl' and press enter (without quote marks) - this should show you the network connections on your PC.

Right click on the connection that is connected, and click Status. A box should open, click the button labelled 'Details...'

A list should appear - one of the entries should be IPv4 Address. This is your PC's local IP address - take a note of this.

From this, change the IP address of your printer so that it shares the first three numbers of your computer's local IP address. For example, if this is 192.168.0.5, then your printer should be 192.168.0.* (* meaning any number up to 254). If you don't do this then your computer will not be able to see your printer! This is the job that DHCP normally does but it appears your printer is not playing ball.

Once you've done this try reinstalling your printer in Windows and let us know how you get on. Apologies if I sound patronising or am pointing out the obvious - it is hard to tell how computer literate people are over the internet :hihi:

EDIT: If you are struggling with any of these steps I am sure someone can help.

  5. If that speed checker on ADSL.cz is connecting to a Czech server to do the speed test, it won't be accurate. Use speedtest.net and connect to the Sheffield server for a more realistic test. As others have said, wait till your 10 day stabilisation period is over before you start shouting at BT for it.

  6. I work have 2children I know its not easy... do you still have the log book or does your insurance company have it? As a vic marker is on your car and isnt removed till its passed the test. Did you know they do sayurday appointments too?

No, I still have the log book - I took it upon myself to repair as it was only a bump in the bonnet and it was the cheapest way to sort out the problem.

I know they have Saturday appointments but I expect they are quite full, but I must get off my backside and actually find this out!

  7. Ok... if you think that to be the case drive around.... you should have a vic test . I couldnt obtain my tax until I had the vic test which is In Doncaster and takes 20mins... is this the first time you should b taxing since needing the vic test

It is the first time, yes - the VIC check is something I'm booking soon but it is difficult to get to when working.

See the following document - under the title "When is a VIC needed?" and you can see that you can legally drive the car:

  8. Hello,

Like an idiot I've only just remembered this evening that my car tax ends today. I've tried to tax it online but to no avail (because my car requires a VIC check it won't do it) and because they don't send you a tax reminder when you need a VIC check I can't do it on the phone. So, I need to go to a post office.

Because I start work at 9am, I need to get to the only nearby post office that opens before then which is at Abbeydale Road (near my work). Do you think it would be okay for me to drive from home to the post office to get my tax sorted - aka if I did get stopped, would the police be understanding under the circumstances?

    Thanks all.

  9. won't it do the same job as a normal wifi adapter ?

And the power line adapters are ok but the whole point is to keep wires to a minimum, which is why I'm interested in trying a wifi dongle first, if that doesn't work then will try other methods

    Thanks all

    Hi,

The problem is that your TV doesn't work in the same way as a Windows PC - it will not recognise the Virgin wi-fi dongle because it has no drivers for it. To create drivers for every wi-fi dongle available, just for one range of TVs would be too expensive and lengthy for a manufacturer to justify unfortunately.

The TV manufacturer most likely be able supply a wi-fi adapter for your TV but will rip you off because of their monopoly position. That's why I suggested powerline adapters as a possibly cheaper option.

  10. The wi-fi dongle almost certainly won't work with your TV - the manufacturers of the TV will be able to supply you with one I imagine, but it'll cost a fortune.

One alternative worth looking into is powerline adaptors. Plug one into your power socket with the ethernet cable from the router going into it. Then plug in another near your TV, with an ethernet cable into your TV. Job done!

  11. ANYONE KNOW HOW TO RESET.ANDROID MID TABLET PC GOT IT FOR DAUGHTER CHRISTMAS. Too many pattern attempts tried and its gone onto google account recovery but she has not set up a google account. So there's no password to put in. Anybody have any ideas?

If she's been downloading apps from Google Play she definitely has set up one - if that's the case ask her/whoever set it up if they can remember the details she put in (username/password etc.) when they first tried to download apps.

  12. Our tram stopped at Manor Top and we were informed it would terminate at Town End due to a severe accident at White Lane.

So I got on the 120 through to Occupation Lane, and proceeded home the rest of the way on foot, only to see a tram go past the bottom of the road on it's way to Hackenthorpe tram stop and presumably Halfway.

    Yay! :/

They can switch tracks at Birley Lane so the trams on that side will have continued running between Birley and Halfway.

  13. Most mid-to-high range Android phones are far better than the 3GS these days - don't listen to the anti-Android brigade because Android phones are perfectly easy to understand and use, and Google Play is excellent for apps, TV, movies and books. There's nothing wrong with Sony models either but don't go for the low-end Miro and Tipo models.

I would try some of the phones out in your price range in a shop and see which one you like best - a lot of it is down to preference. I would only recommend you don't go for the lower-end Android phones that are cheap or have small screens as you're likely be disappointed with performance and it's worth shelling out a little more.

Hope this helps and I'm happy to suggest a few decent models if you give me an idea of how much you want to spend per month/pay for the phone outright :)
