  1. hello here is an update on my husbands back problems. mri was done on 9th august with app to see consultand on 30th pain so bad during last week we went to a and e 3 times always sent home to take more pain killers (after having morphine on one occasion) back to a and e wednesday teatime and suddenly found ourselfes in a new world altogether, blue lights to hallamshire for emergency op as disc has now progressed into cauda equina. cant praise hallamshire enough they were great, he is back on ward and walking tonight and although he still has only little movement in his left foot everything else is great. fingers crossed that he gets feeling back in left leg he is finally pain free and releived that it has been sorted. thanks for all advice on here.
  2. hi my husband though he had a prolapsed disc which he was waiting to see the consultant about. due to awful pain and trouble flexing his leg we went back to a and e yet again. this time they reacted very differently (previously sent home with pain killers and told to come back if gets worse) this time he was rushed to hospital for emergency disc removal and what is now being called cauda equine. he is back on the ward now so hopefully the worst is over. does anyone know how soon the feeling in his legs and little boy bits will come back after surgery, he had only been back on ward an hour but legs were not moving any better than befor. does it take a few days? thanks
  3. hello its a few days since i posted on here and thanks for all replies. the upto date info is now that his back pain has eased due to the morphine (they said it should help with back pain for few days) but his legs are worse.could it be that as his back now does not hurt so much he is laying flat and trapping nerves in legs so making leg pain so bad. with the back pain he could not lay flat for more than a few mins which was why mri was stopped part way through he now has little flexion in left foot and both feet feel fully numb. app with consultant not till next week and we can see him getting new symptons every day. wonder what the waiting time for opperation is after consultant appointment
  4. we have just spoke to nhs direct and they say new numbness is nothing to do with the morphine and that it is his disc that is causing a deteriation. he was told unofficially that its a prolapsed disc as the scan has not been reported on since tuesday. nhs direct said to phone and tell consultants sec that he has new deteriation ie numbness, and also he now has restricted movement in his left leg, he can not flex the left ankle anything like as much as the right one. we just need someone to look at his scan and examin him as he is getting new symptons daily as its worrying thanks for all advice so far
  5. hello my husband was given iv morphine at the hospital yesterday due to bery bad back pain caused by a slipped disc. he has come home still in the same amount of pain but his feet are now totlally numb and feel like he is walking with pading on botom of his feet. he is limping terribly. the pain in his back has lessened a bit but his legs are still burning/numb. does anyone know would the morphine cause numbness in feet? thanks
  6. my husband has an out patient appointment with the consultand at the end of the month to find the results of the mri and hopefully then we will know what the plan of action is to be. we started to look at going private but decided to wait till after app at end of month first.
  7. thanks for the reply, i really hope he doesnt have to wait 3 months for the op. he can hardly walk during the day and nights are even worse. he is on tramadol gabapentin and naproxen which are having little or no effect. he was given morphine inj last night and his legs still feel drunk today.
  8. hi, i posted on here for the first time last week asking for advice following a mri scan for my husband, we got lots of helpful replies thank you last night we ended up back in a and e as the pain was so bad again, it is always worst at night as he cant lay down it now seems possible thats he has a prolapsed disc although nothing confirmed yet until the scan is reported on, he has had some stong medicine in hospital and is back home now asleep does anyone have any experience of a prolapsed disc, is it the same as a slipped disc, herniated disc any pain relief tips? thanks very much
  9. thanks arguendo, he has an appointment back with the GP early next week to discuss tablets again. night time is the worst. the pain is there all the time day and night but at least during the day he can sit leaning forward to get a bit less pain, unfortunatly he cant sleep in that position - maybe there is a gap in the market for a sitting position bed!!! thanks again
  10. thank you very much for all your replies. Just to let you know a bit more he is already on tramador, naproxen and gabapentin which are having little effect. we have been to a & e on 2 occasions but both were befor the scan so we were told to wait for that befor they could do anything which is fair. the reason for the scan is to discover what exactly is causing the pain although they seem to be thinking that it is stenosis. either caused by wear and tear or a problem with a disc. he is still no better and can virtually not sleep as it is so painful to lay down, we are currently having a few hours sleep each night. during the day he is pottering about in the house but is unable to get out as car journeys are too painful we are hoping the scan shows somethig up and they phone for him. there is still the worry that as they only got 75% of the MRI finished befor he pressed the stop button there wont be enough to look at. thanks again
  11. hi this is the first time iv used this board and we are looking for some advice re geting the results from an MRI scan that my husband had at nhs hospital on tuesday night. he is suffering terribly from back pain which is causing his legs to burn and go numb, we have been to A & E twice but both times we were told to wait until the MRI to see what was going on which was fair enough although frustrating when he was is so much pain. he had the MRI on tuesday and had to press the stop button as it was too painfull for him to complete the whole time, the operator said they had got 75% of the test completed and he thought it would be enough for a report to be completed. he is still in agony and his follow up appointment with the consultant is not until end of month, does any one know will they contact us if anything serious or will we just sit on a pile until the appointment? thanks for any advice
