  1. Hi Guys

Here we are in West Wales and the one thing this lovely part of the world can't compete with Sheffield for is its car boot sales!

We are coming back to Sheff for a visit over the half term and will probably be around either the weekend of the 22nd or 29th of October. What will the best sales be on these dates? I'm after kids stuff, clothes, shoes and toys.

At the moment, I'm running out of clothes for my twin daughters and they're ending up wearing their brother's hand me downs. It's a good thing they don't notice things like that in the country, but people are starting to think I've got three boys! :hihi:

  2. Hi, any other feedback about the Owlerton statidum carboot?? I am wanting to do one on Sunday and was thinking about either going to Marsh Lane or Owlerton Stadium. What is the Hillsborough Arena one like??
Read a few posts above. Negative feedback for Owlerton. They seem to have missed the important point that car boot sales are meant to be cheap and car booters are extremely money conscious. I for one feel deterred by entrance & parking fees.
  3. My son who's 4 has been going to coaching sessions with techneglobal.com. I'm assuming they have a website. It's Saturday mornings from 9.30 in Endcliffe Park, Hunters Bar and I know they're doing summer schools somewhere too.

It appeared that they had a younger group last week too, certainly looked younger than my son.

It's turn up and pay as you go. He's really enjoyed it.

  4. MUSIC PLAYTIME & CHILDRENS MUSIC WORKSHOPS

    290, MILLHOUSES LANE, ECCLESALL

    S11 9JB SHEFFIELD , SOUTH YORKSHIRE

    Phone : +44 (0) 114 236 9253

My 4 yr old's been doing these for a few years now. The teacher, Mary, is a qualified music teacher & teaches recorder & piano to older kids. These sessions are pretty structured and teach through song, dance & percussion instruments. She's a bit old school and I think my son has learnt a great deal from them and really enjoys music & dancing now.

  5. went to Hillsborough Arena today a good few cars but very poor to buy and the people with the trollys pulling them about what a nightmare they should ban them i was run over 3 times and pushed out of the way with one and if your dog s***s please pick it up

    rant over lol

The observation's been made: The "new Blonk Street". Bit if a shame really, as Hillsborough was always good value last year.
  6. I am all for recycling and it hadn't really occurred to me that the skip companies might use what was in the skip as revenue, but the skip was on my drive and it's not an open drive by the pavement, you have to walk up it. Until I phone the skip company and ask them to take it away, I really see the skip as somewhere to store unwanted items, so, for example, I'd already promised a lot of the wood that was in there to a friend who has a wood burning stove.

Out of interest, my OH seems to think that scrap metal merchants need a licence to collect scrap metal from people. Does anyone know if this is the case?

  7. Manuka honey my absolute favourite
Costco sells two jars for the same price you can buy one in Tesco

As far as health foods are concerned: nuts & seeds for me and jumbo oats so I can make my own cereal. Hemp seeds & spelt flakes always seem difficult to come by. It's always good if you can buy larger amounts at lower prices.

I do like the idea of free advice. Doesn't the shop in Broomhill already do this?

Prices have rocketed everywhere it seems.

  8. Just asked a man in a grey vest who was poking around in a skip on my drive to leave. He was driving an Orange transit type van.

He was perfectly pleasant when I asked him to leave saying he was going to ring and ask if he could take the metal if he found any - but he didn't ring first.

Why don't these people realise it's intimidating to have strange men rooting around when they're not invited?

  9. I went to Loxley for the first time last week and it was good, the same as other posters have said- a genuine car boot. Quality rather than quantity, Purplecat. Unfortunately, it's the last one for me as I'm off to Wales at the end of the month.

I personally think the competition is good. Not everyone wants a massive car boot so there's something to suit all tastes. I have no interest in going to a massive boot, breathed a sigh of relief when I saw Loxley was quite small and intimate. I get exhausted trailing a 4 yr old and a double buggy round a huge car boot. I'm also put off by car boots that (1) charge for entry, (2) charge for parking, (3) have loads of dealers selling things they bought earlier at higher prices so the small ones can make themselves more attractive by avoiding these pitfalls.

I can understand the comments about Tescos being the "new Blonk Street", although I think that more aptly describes Hillsborough these days.

Bowshaw has gone down hill in my experience (admittedly a single visit - this was enough to put me off) now that it charges only £1 to stand. the problem with this is that anyone can turn up with any old tat if they only risk losing £1 to stand. It makes for grim browsing.

  10. RozeePozee has very kindly looked after the car boot megathreads for the last few years, keeping the OP's current and all the information readily available for other thread users.

She won't be able to do that in the future since she's not going to be in Sheffield any more. Is anybody else prepared to take on this management now?

Please let the admin team know by contacting the Helpdesk if you can- we'd love to hear from you, as the information contained within this thread needs to be actively managed by someone who is interested in the topic.

Please note, my PM box is closed to incoming messages, so you'll need to either contact the Helpdesk or my email box (links to both are under the 'Help and Contact Us' link over <<<there) to contact the admin team.

    Thank you :)

Thanks Medusa. I've just updated as best and as quickly as I can - not to my usual standard, but I'm up to my eyeballs in packing and small children!
  11. Is niagara big?
It's not a bad size. Not like Marsh Lane, more like Hillsborough maybe.

I always love this car boot because it's mainly coppers selling. Often both in the family are POs and have nice fat incomes so their stuff isn't rubbish ;) It's great for families, there was loads of nice toys and kids stuff there when I've been for the past two years or so. I'm very sorry to see we'll have left Sheffield by the time the first one is on.

  12. bye rozee good luck.

(bet you can't resist logging in every so often to see whats happening!)

That's so funny! I probably will!!!

Thanks so much for all you thank you posts - you're very sweet. I won't be leaving now 'til end July but I'm mad busy having to pack up a life of ten years in Sheffield and 3 small children, so I'll bob in when I can.

  13. Our's would have square eyes if we just left him to it. There's no TV before 4pm and it's switched off before tea. Sometimes, he has a bit extra at the weekends. I try and limit dvds for special treats, although I'm less successful with this!

We only watch BBC to avoid the ads and have taught him that advertising is what companies do to get you to buy stuff you don't need. He cracks me up when he comes back from granny's saying: Guess what mum? I've been watching ITV!

  14. Goodbye!

Just letting you guys know (as I mentioned a while back) I'm leaving Sheffield in the next month and moving to West Wales, so I will no longer be updating the first post.

I have contacted the forum organisers & asked if they can find someone to take over, so if you fancy the job you might want to contact them!

Thanks for all your help compiling the list over the last few years. Hope it's been useful to you.

    Best wishes
