The green room has a wednesday night session called 'People are Strange', which has a facebook page if you search for it. The organiser's a chap called James who is very nice and approachable.

 

Other options for the singer-songwriter types might be the Redhouse on Solly St - they have an open mic (also wednesday) that puts on a longer set from a featured artist at the start. Again, there's a facebook page called something like 'redhouse open mic'. West St Live aren't very geared for acoustic singers, but do do occasional unplugged-ish gigs on sundays so have a look at their listings (google 'mentholmans'). I think the Fox & Duck in Broomhill have gigs occasionally but not sure who to contact about that.

 

There's also a fair few open mics to have a look at, a quick scout around these forums should give you a good idea. I'd recommend Mondays at the green room, and open space which is thursdays at the Shef uni student's union for friendly ones.
