Malanimal
The Sheffield Equality Group, a local branch of the Equality Trust, will be meeting on Thursday December 3rd at St Matthews Church on Carver St from 7-9pm. The group aims to reduce the gap between rich and poor in the city and promote the need for a more equal society, as set out in "The Spirit Level", researched by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett. The meeting will discuss activities such as the launch of a Sheffield Pledge on reducing the gap between rich and poor, how to promote the voice of those worst affected by the divide, and any ideas that will help make our city whole. All are welcome. For more on the Sheffield Equality Group, inequality in Sheffield, and the national Equality Trust, please visit our website: http://www.sheffieldequalitytrust.org.uk More details =============== We live in an unequal city, where nearly all (92%) of children in Bradway get 5 A -C GCSEs, compared to a quarter of children in Brightside. Where people living in Crooksmoor die fourteen years younger than those living in Crosspool. Where rates of mental health problems are three times higher in Netherthope than in Netheredge. Sheffield Council has recently committed to reducing the gap between rich and poor, and the recent report "a tale of two cities" has highlighted how divided the city is. What is important to note is that this is not just a problem that affects one part of our city, it is something that affects us all. The Sheffield Equality Group aims to promote, advocate and support policies in Sheffield that will direct resources actively towards those with lowest income and least opportunities. The group supports the principles of fair redistribution of money and equal opportunities. This requires narrowing the income gap between the richest and poorest because the evidence demonstrates that this will benefit everyone in Sheffield. http://www.sheffieldequalitytrust.org.uk
Plain Talker
Are the "equality" group also aware of Sheffield city council's recommendations on providing equality in ensuring accessible venues for meetings?
Malanimal
Are the "equality" group also aware of Sheffield city council's recommendations on providing equality in ensuring accessible venues for meetings? I'm not aware of SCC's recommendations, I advertised the meeting on their Event Sheffield site but accessibility was never mentioned. However, the venue for the next meet will be accessible. I had heard St Matthews was being made accessible some time back but forgot to check if that actually went ahead, apologies for that.
