  1. With half of Fox`s already under construction for new housing and a new Tesco`s i think its inevitable the whole site will be regenerated and the steel works lost forever.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-30596747

You are talking about the steelworks site that used to be called Fox's many years ago. Now owned and run successfully by Tata. The part that the retail park is being built on was formerly ran by Outo Kumpu. That part of the steelworks closed a few years back, leaving the still sizable Tata works.

Fox Wire is/was along the bypass , just beyond Stocksbridge.

Bodie, I know people that worked there. They weren't lazy, just understaffed.

  2. I cancelled my Sky a couple of years back, as I was out of contract. Wasn't a problem apart from everything that i'd recorded on Sky+ was locked in the box, even though i'd already paid for it. Typical Sky tactic.

You don't need Sky these days for extra channels, and they know it. You will not miss it after a few days, if anything it's a relief.

As for your phone line and broadband, you should never get tied into a contract as they have you over a barrel. Read the small print and you will find they can put prices up as they please, and trying to leave them usually results in a long drawn out process with penalties.

My advice to anyone is use Freeview/Freesat for your telly.

Keep your phone line on BT, they don't hold you to their broadband. You pay slightly more for your line rental, but you're not tied in.

Use a cheap internet provider, but buy your own modem. I use PlusNet.

Going back to Sky+. If you have a Smart TV with USB ports in the back you can save money on a recorder by buying a £50 1TB External Hard Drive, like you have for your computer. Plug this into the back of the TV, the TV will ask if you want to format the EHD to your TV. Then simply record onto it.

Saves spending £200 on having another big box under your telly ;)

  3. Where i work, we have a 3D printer.

It is still limited, and the printing of objects takes about 8 hours at a time. The material is still very expensive, never mind the equipment and software. So mass production, where the money is, would be a bad business idea.

Why would you have one in your home?, the novelty of recreating household objects would soon wear thin.

  4. Why does being born and brought up in England mean we can't celebrate St Patrick's Day? Jesus wasn't born and brought up here so does that mean we can't celebrate Christmas? And as St George wasn't English either then we shouldn't be celebrating his day by your rules.

You can celebrate whatever you want, just don't pretend to be something you're not.

On Christmas day, i don't pretend to be 'Gods' son !!. And i don't make a deal of St.Georges either.

  5. I knew there would be at least one miserable bleeder. I'm surprised it took so long :hihi:

    Firstly, thankyou Discodown

Secondly, i'm not being miserable, i just find it all a bit false.

I will still be going out today enjoying myself,as i do most saturdays.

Thirdly, you are NOT half-irish, there's no such thing. If one of your parents,grandparents,great-grandparents etc were born and raised in Ireland, then they are Irish. If you were born and raised in England, you are English. If we want to use family history we should all be out celebrating Ethiopa Day !!

    Anyway,suit yourselves,have a great day, ya plastic paddy :wink::hihi:

  6. Why celebrate St.Patricks Day?

Do they celebrate St.Georges Day in Ireland? No

Are you yourself genuinely Irish? No

Are you falling for some great Guinness promotion, yet still paying full price, thereby boosting profits for their shareholders? Yes

Are you patronisingly going to wander about town wearing a big green sponge hat, saying 'irish' words, and generally being annoying? Yes

  7. Oh no, the spelling police. You must have been the one that listened in Kettle Breath's English classes at Stocksbridge School. :hihi::hihi:

Haha, no not at all. I was born and brought up in Sheffield, now aged 40, moved up here 8 years ago. I just find it a bit irritating when people knock this area.

It's a good area, a lot better than quite a lot of areas in Sheffield. I would not move back into Sheffield now.

  8. Or perhaps makes sense for the landlord to do it during the day when the pub is quiet rather than an evening when the pub is really busy?

Some would say leaving your windows open while you're out in Deepcar is rather asking for trouble. Especially since you obviously live close to the King and Miller, are out during the day and often leave your windows open. Nothing like advertising for burglars is there?

Firstly <removed>, the Miller is undergoing renovation at the moment, so is not open. I saw the smoke when i arrived home, it was garden waste that was being burned, so probably set alight by the landscapers/gardeners.

Secondly, leaving your windows open in Deepcar is certainly no more risky than leaving them open in Oughtibridge.

  9. £100 cheaper for me this year. Would have been £100 more if I stayed with current provider.

The comparison sites aren't the best place to get a deal any more.

When you're giving details to a new company to get a quote, make sure you give them last year's renewal quote (which I assume was lower). Ask them if they can match it. Most companies would jump at the chance if it means they gain your custom and it's not an unreasonable discount on the original quote (I think any discount less than £100 is realistic).

If comparison sites are no longer the best, would you mind telling us where is the best places to get quotes?

It would be much appreciated, ta

  10. As long as your not wanting to do any hard core off-roading, you'd probably find a 4x4 estate car better for mpg. The octavia scout for example will do over 50mpg (what car lists av. mpg 57.4). You'd probably find that people are kinder to you in traffic too.

Estate cars with 4x4 are all very well, but not much more use in snow and ice than 2 wheel drive cars unless you swap the standard road tyres for off-road tyres.

Swapping the tyres/wheels will invalidate your insurance unless you pay more on your premium.

  11. I think it is. Even for main dealers, buying the car is OK, but getting them to actually do a dilligent job of servicing and warranty seems almost impossible.

I have found Gilders in Sheffield to be particularly useless. To get anymore apathetic about doing a decent job, you'd have to be dead*.

    (* others experience may vary)

I would like to second this, as i too am a former Gilders customer

Never again, same goes for their 'servicing'!

  12. Maybe we should be looking forward to 2012 because although it is not just the end of the world - it is also the start of a new age.

Read of this what you will.

The following predictions are theories based upon sources of varying origin and credibility. Many of these theories rely upon conjecture, and should therefore not be considered to be facts.

The Olduvai cliff will begin and permanent blackouts will occur worldwide, according to "The Peak of World Oil Production and the Road To The Olduvai Gorge" by Richard C. Duncan.

The Prophecy of the Popes, attributed to Saint Malachy, speculated that Pope Benedict XVI would reign during the beginning of the tribulation of which Jesus spoke, and sometime later a future pope described in the prophecy as "Peter the Roman", the last in this prophetic list, would appear, bringing as a result the destruction of the city of Rome and the Last Judgement. [4].

Terence McKenna's Novelty Theory, based on a mathematical interpretation of human events, predicts a point of singularity in which humankind will go through a great shift in consciousness.

According to the 1997 book The Bible Code, according to certain algorithms of the Bible code a meteor, asteroid or comet will collide with the Earth. Some believe this means the world will end. This event was supposedly prophesized by John the Evangelist as Wormwood in the Book of Revelation.

This is from Wickipedia - I didn't make it up.

With regards to the Pope, maybe you should look at this........

  13. Considering ASDA was the first to drop it's fuel price several days ago, and then again in the last couple of days, it's no suprise Morrisons have had to follow and cut their prices too. Why is it that you can go to any different Morrison filling station and the price of fuel differs at each one ?. Bear in mind that it's the same supplier that Morrisons use for their fuel at each station, if they can sell it cheap at one filling station they can sell it at the same price at them all. Nothing but a big rip-off.

I once asked about this in the Hillsbro' Morrisons, the woman behind the counter said they only have to compete with the nearest petrol station, which is the Total station back towards town

  14. This is sad news, i'm only 38, but did go to Hillsbro with my dad in the 70's, my first game was when they drew against Shrewsbury, can't remember much else about it.

I remember Mick Prendergast because he once had a 'profile' in the programme, and when he was asked what he'd be if he wasn't a footballer, he replied.......gravedigger !, the daft sod :)

    Condolences to his family.

  15. I have recently had my own bad experience with Gilders (Audi)

I bought my A3 from Gilders nearly 3 years ago, with 1 year warranty and 2 year 'free' servicing, they were great while car was under warranty. As soon as that run out they didn't want to know, especially as i wouldn't pay a fortune to extend it.

Anyway, the 'free' servicing amounted to ONE service in those 2 years, so the car goes in, gets 'serviced', gets hosed down(valet), and i get it back, no problem so far.................

..........forward 1 year, car is due for service again, so i took it to a mate as i didn't trust Gilders, and neither did i want to pay the exhorbitant charges they pull out of thin air.

My mate serviced it as it was running like a dog, which i thought was strange, my mate told me to look at the Service history.

It turns out that they allegedly changed the oil and air filter at Gilders....they hadn't. The oil had never been changed as it was like sludge, and the air filter was missing !!. The service book also showed that the oil had not been changed at the previous 2 services at the dealers in Taunton (where car had come from), so this meant that the oil had not been changed since the car rolled off the production line, 67000 miless ago.

All the filters and plugs, as well as the oil, were originals too. Effetively, they had just stamped the book and gave the car back:rant:

The car runs fine now, thankfully

I phoned Gilders about this ,but they said the oil had been changed according to the receipt, but the service book says not, they said bring the book to us and they will 'amend' it !!!!, the air filter was also on this receipt, hmmmmmmm, i wonder where the filter and oil actually went?

I will never deal with them again, and i too was pleased to hear they had a pay cut, they truly deserved it.

I've a good mind to go there on pretence of buying a new car, and thrash the test drive to do the damage they tried to do to mine
