Some further information from The Kelly’s Directories of Sheffield & Rotherham. From my experience, always treat the information in the Directories with a little caution, particularly the fact that a person lived at the address stated in a particular year. The Directories were not a Census, never the less they are a very helpful resource.

The lower part of Arbourthorne Road only ran from City Road to the edge of the upper end of the Norfolk Park. These were the lower house numbers, 1-39 and 4-16a then the Arbourthorne Cottages and Arbourthorne Lodge, running up to Fellbrigg Road. From here the estate houses continued towards Hurfield Road with houses; 353-641, and 392-640.

Sometime between 1951 and 1954 the lower part of Arbourthorne Road was renamed St Aidan's Road (the 1954 Directory says '(Formerley part of Arbourthorne road.) (No throughfare.)'
St Aiden's Road covered the house numbers 1-39 and 4-22; followed on by the Arbourthorne Cottages and Arbourthorne Lodge.

I've not come across this address before. Iv'e had a quick look in the directories but come up with a blank.

If you are able to buy a copy of Arthur's death certificate, it might be more informative, or the hand writing could be difficult to decipher. However if you ask the question on this and other forums, some one may know if there was or wasn't a '3 High Gell' at the time of Arthur's death.

If you check out the births from the marriage date of 1885 on the GRO site for the registration district of Ecclesall Bierlow you will find more children belonging to the marriage with the mother's maiden surname of HALLAM.

Just checked the address of  104 Franklin Street Sheffield in the 1921 Census on the findmypast site and for free it records that an Arthur and a Lily are living there.  Pay per View to see the actual records at this time I'm afraid.

 

Also Kelly's Directory of Sheffield & Rotherham 1957 has an Arthur MERRILL living at 76 Cater Road, Sheffield 8 - which is a possibility.

In the above link, I've joined the three photographs to give an impression of walking from Ecclesall road towards Cemetery Road, with Angus Terrace and Angus Square being on your left hand side. Angus Terrace consisted of three storey back-to back houses (numbered 1 to 10). Angus Square originally consisted of three storey back to back houses (numbered 11 to 20) and the block of two storey houses (numbered 1 to 10). A Godfrey map of Ecclesall and Sharrow of 1903 cleary shows the two storey block of houses at this time to consist of 10 properties. At sometime between this date and early 1950 the properties numered 1 to 2 were either destroyed or demolished. I have indicated on the photo two small red dots which indicate both ends of the passageway show on the map, by which you could access Angus Terrace from Angus Square.

Yes I remember the song well, happier and simpler times than today's. Cub night was always on a Wednesday night if I remember and as you say we used to go either to the chippy after or Mrs Tudor's shop and probably buy a bag of tiger nuts. Remember when we had the two day expedition to Ecllesall Woods one school holiday, you, me and Fungi, taking the wood, hammer and nails with us on the bus to build a tree house there. That's where your DIY career started Chris!

If you google "Sharrow Residents 1961" (include the quote maks) you should find electoral lists for the area for 1961 - 1962, hosted by http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk site.

Maybe Dr Greaves. I don't recall the number, but your description fits the location.

The majority of houses on Franklin Street were back-to-backs and existed on both sides of the street, but as you can see from this 1950s map (map 269), it is possible to differentiate the back-to-back properties.

This was one of my favourite Christmas presents as a kid - brilliant game. The joy stick controlled a magnet under the board, which moved the vehicles about. I remember that you were instructed to lightly dust the board surface with talc to aid the movement of the cars and bikes. At a slightly earlier age I was given another game which worked on the same principle, except the board was designed to look like a black and white tiled floor. There were about 7 plastic crates, which had a horizontally hinged flaps at each end, which meant you could drive a small model of a pouncing cat through them. The idea was that a small mouse was hidden inside one of the crates, out of sight of the 'driver'. The player who discovered the mouse by entering the least number of crates was the winner.

Dan Dare Radio Station, but frustratingly the wired walkie-talkies didn't work!

I lived on middle Pearl Street at 23/1 between c1953 to 1964, my name is Kay Vernals my sister was Elaine and i had two brothers Steven and Andrew, i remember Philip Robinson, the Smiths who were John,Jeanette,Joan and Jennifer,Johnny Gill who all livrd on Pearl St and Alan Robinson who lived on Washington Road.

Iwent to Pomona St School and later Greystones Sec Modern.

I remember the chip shop on Langdon Street where the owner was an avid Sheff United fan,also Ted James who owned the paper shop on Washington Rd, i remember Millerships shop on Lansdowne Rd and yes Jowetts Pawn shop on Club Garden Rd where i often went with my mother to Pawn anything she could at the time, times were hard and the house we lived in was a slum but there were enjoyable times too.

I remember Mr James and his wife running the paper shop, he had the left hand wall of the shop, full of 6d bags of toys. I seem to remember an old chap had the shop before him, who had a glass display case with old wooden toys in it. Mr James wasn't there too long before he opened his first bike shop on Alderson Road, and then gradually expanded it, shop by shop, down Brammall Lane.

You always had a difficult decision to make in Millership's shop. With 3d to spend, did you buy three things from the penny tray, or one thing from the tuppenny tray and one from the penny tray, other some other combination. I once went in there aged about seven, put my money on the counter but it rolled off. Couldn't for the life of me find where it had rolled to, until the owner said "have a look in the turnups of your trousers" - and there it was.

Happy days.
