I know this is an old topic but could anyone tell me about the trees that lined Western  Road.

I ask because I read an article in a newspaper a while ago that the council were going to chop them down. It went on to say that each tree was planted in memory of men who went to Western Road school and died in the war.

I didn't know this when I went to Western Road but I remembered the trees and walking past them to get to the annexe for history.

Would that be the same names that were on the plaque previously mentioned?

Were the trees chopped down ? Or did people protest?

Any information would be great as don't live near now.

Luckily they weren't cut down as Stag protested. Yes it was those listed on the plaque that apparently was destroyed or lost.

  2. John appears as Oxley in 1901 census so I'm guessing the John Oxley is probably the father but can't be sure.

    Fredrick Butcher 38
    Harriet Butcher 37
    Annie Butcher 16
    Sarah Butcher 12
    Harriett Dunn 56
    John Oxley 27
    Rose Harriet Oxley 26

    John Oxley

Rose H Freeman is down as  Rose H Freedom in 1881. She was only 8 and classed as a boarder? Also a boarder in 1991  census.1881 England Census for Rose H. Freedom

  3. Right, had another look at it this am and Elsie seems to have been born to a John and Florence Freeman nee Hobson. John was born 1899. The families seem to be related because their other daughter Florence married a  Herbert Rodgers in  1949. It shows this also in the 1939 register.  This John Freeman lived with some Oxleys  in 1911 census.  Rose Harriet Freeman, John's Mum  seems to have had him and his brother Charles out of wedlock then marries John Oxley in 1904.

  4. Are we actually looking at the right Doris? as there was one with mother's maiden name Proctor born in 1922 with a sister called Irene?

Just noticed date of birth in an earlier post. Spent all day on this so my advice would be get the marriage certificate from 1947 to Herbert Hurt and check if it has the former maiden names on there as she could have been married a few times or get your Mum's birth certificate and see if any more details on there.

    Hi Hillsbro,

I think the Mabel Hart born in 1893 died 1899 but not been able to progress  other theory any further yet. 😔

  5. I have a theory, not that I've tested it out robustly yet. If you look down the 1939  register page down to the bottom there is a Charles A Hurt, thought at first it said Hunt but I traced a Charles A Hurt back to being born in 1885. He had a sister of the right age called Martha Hurt. They were in St Silas's parish in 1911. Could Mabel be a pet name for Martha? Also why was the surmame crossed out and Hurt installed before she married Herbert almost 10 years later! Can't find a link between two Hurt families but could have been a distant cousin. Smith may have been put in for kids names as Mabel/Martha and Albert weren't actually married?

Or was she registered at birth as Hart not Hurt? Still can't find a marriage to Freeman though !!! Death index says birth was 10 June 1893 whereas 1939 census as 1894!

    Name: Mabel Hart

Sorry, thats too simplistic.  Families often survive because they are not enclosed together 24/7.  Statistics around divorce and domestic violence over Christmas holidays bear that out.

Totally agree, it's not healthy to be round the same people all the time. Definitely the case that absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Met her briefly but she struck me as being a lovely person.  I was sorry to see her daughter on the local news, explaining she had to self-isolate during this awful time for her.  I wish her the strength she will need.

Lovely article here, ending with her daughter asking everyone to have a cup of tea in Pat's memory.  I'll definitely raise my favourite cup to Pat this afternoon.

No, I don't see why folk who do not use buses help pay for council run buses.

Thought the idea of community was that you pay for services that are for the good of community not just personally used by you? I rarely use Libraries these day as I can afford to buy books and have internet at home but don't begrudge paying  towards Libraries for those they are a lifeline for. My partner and I are on over 40 grand a year but still use buses as we don't drive.

  9. I went up Walkley Lane yesterday, the resurfaced section at the bottom (Ripley Street) is still not flat, you can feel the undulations where the surface below had sunk, they seem to have just smoothed some new tarmac over the top.

I'd be surprised if it doesn't slump again within a few years, they haven't dug it out or done any true remedial work on it.

It's so frustrating, we have been inconvenienced twice now and they will probably back again in a couple of years :( I have also been told that the 95 will be turning round at the Pondarosa from 13th- 17th September:mad:
