I went to Burton Street school for a week in 1961, when my brother was born. I stayed with my grandparents, my grandad was caretaker there. His name was George Brown.

I remember Heeley Baths. We used to go there every Monday morning from Lowfields School. If we hurried getting dressed we could walk the long way back and call and have a sarasparilla!!

Canon Hall and Canon Hall Farm near Barnsley is a good day out. You can have a guide with you who exlpains about the animals and lets the children handle some of them, there is also a safe adventure playground within the farm area. Big grassy field near the hall itself and a river that you can walk round. A good trip!

I used to work with a woman called Margaret Hurley. She lived at Chapeltown but I don't know where she is now. She did have a daughter called Jane who went to Brantwood Girls School.

A girl I went to King Ecgbert School with went to Pye Bank. She left in 1964and her namew is Barbara Smith if anyone remembers her.

2. to stop them being exloited e.g. decorating a room for someone and then being given 5p (bob) for doing it! Yes it did happen!

The scout association do actually celebrate St. George's Day every year, but this is obviously not enough. I asked my local landlady (on St.Patricks day) if they were going to celebrate St. George's day - she didn't even know when it was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not from Hackenthorpe but my Aunt and Uncle were. There name was Herod. My Aunt was a piano teacher and the lived on Cotleigh Crescent. \my cousin Lynne went to Carter Lodge School - in the 60's I suppose that would have been. My great grandmother lived on Rainbow Forge. Anyone remember them?

Northern Strip mining was further up on East Bank Road. Granville College was built on the site.

Remember it well. My son was born 16th June, 1976 it was so cold I was wearing a sheepskin coat (it was allowed then) asked for extra blankets in the hospital. We came home on the 21st June and that was the first day of the glorious weather. I also thought 1975 was a very hot summer.

I wouldn't be without my milkman. He does an excellant job, not only delivering milk, potatoes, cream, orange juice etc., he also keeps an eye on our home if awe are on holiday. So it may be more expensive than the supermarket but there is a lot of peace of mind!

Davage 2 from the same source there was a Wilson, Hawksworth and Moss Shear steel Manufacturers and forgers, Beeley Wood works. I have this information from a book written by Major Conrad Kaye entitled 'Wadesleia to Wadsley', it was publishe din 1988 and in the back it says 'apprentice's indentures dated 1830, whoch shows George Rose, pocket knifw cutler, taking James Crookes as his apprentice. Miss Elsie Rose a descendant of above was cleaner at Wisewood Comp School. Now retired she lives inRural Lane and has some interesting relics of old Wadsley.' Hope this is useful!

I remember my gramdmother helping out on one of the stalls there. I think it was a model railway tent, anyway there was a fire in there I was terrified. I was only about 4 years old. I have always been afraid of fairs since.

What a fantastic thread. So many things brought to mind. I wasn't allowed anything from the penny (trash tray) as my dad used to call it. Loved cod liver oil amd malt. Can't remember bubbly gum in jubblies though. Can anyone remember having to queue at the doctors surgery to have their polo jabs? I remember satnding in the queue and was so frightenend I ran off round the lump telling anyone who knew me not to tell. Got caught though and I actually never felt the injection!! Happy days!!
