A powerful new theatrical sharing exploring migration, family, and belonging
Kubulaya: Away From Home is a new work-in-progress theatrical sharing by Roots Mbili Theatre, written and directed by John Rwothomack, and presented at Sheffield’s intimate Playhouse theatre.

Set over the course of one emotionally charged evening, the story invites audiences to become silent witnesses to a family at breaking point.
The story
Meet Ntanda, the youngest daughter, turning seventeen and hoping for nothing more than time with her family.
Meet Vera, a nurse, mother, and wife, who has sacrificed a double-paid shift to be there.
Meet Nelson, once a successful businessman in Lusaka, now working as a care worker in Sheffield, navigating a life far removed from the one he built.
And meet Mulenga, an engineer who moved to the UK as a teenager and learned to survive within a system not built for him.

What begins as a birthday gathering slowly unravels into a night of revelations — sparked by a single, startling announcement — exposing truths that challenge everything this family believes about love, sacrifice, and survival.
Themes and approach
Infused with Zambian folk music and a rich blend of African and Western storytelling traditions, Kubulaya: Away From Home takes a bold and compassionate look at the high rate of separation among sub-Saharan African couples who migrate to the UK. The piece explores how culture, finance, faith, and migration pressures intersect to test family bonds.

This sharing presents the first act of the play and is co-produced by Seventh Productions. The performance will be followed by a Q&A session for ticket holders, offering audiences deeper insight into the work and its development.
Venue: The Playhouse
The performance takes place in the Tanya Moiseiwitsch Playhouse, located within the Crucible. This flexible studio space is known for championing Sheffield-made work, fringe productions, and new voices — transforming completely for every show.
Age guidance: 12+
Running time: approx. 1 hour 30 minutes (including interval)

A world-class cello recital comes to Sheffield
This special evening concert brings together three giants of the classical repertoire — Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, and Benjamin Britten — performed by internationally acclaimed cellist Li-Wei Qin with pianist Jeremy Young.

Taking place in the intimate Playhouse theatre, this concert offers a rare opportunity to hear one of today’s leading cellists up close in a programme of some of the greatest chamber works ever written for the instrument.
The programme
The evening’s music spans Romantic lyricism, 20th-century intensity, and classical innovation:
Johannes Brahms – Sonata in E minor, Op.38 (approx. 25 minutes)
Benjamin Britten – Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op.65 (approx. 20 minutes)
Fang Man – Lin Chong (approx. 8 minutes)
Ludwig van Beethoven – Sonata in D, Op.102 No.2 (approx. 20 minutes)
For his Sheffield debut, Li-Wei Qin performs the last — and often considered the finest — of Beethoven’s cello sonatas, a work he has previously recorded for Decca to great acclaim. Brahms’s richly expressive Sonata adds warmth and depth, while Britten’s intense and dramatic writing brings striking contrast.
About the performers
Described by Gramophone as “a superbly stylish, raptly intuitive performer”, Li-Wei Qin has appeared twice as a soloist at the BBC Proms and has collaborated with many of the world’s most prestigious orchestras. His career includes a Silver Medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition and First Prize at the International Naumburg Competition.

The concert will be recorded by BBC Radio 3 for future broadcast, marking it as a particularly significant evening for Sheffield’s classical music scene.

A bold, joyful new play about labels, neurodivergence, and finding your own way to fly
My Brother’s a Genius is an explosive new play by Debris Stevenson, presented by Sheffield Theatres, Theatre Centre, and the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain.

Blending poetry, grime, music, and movement, this funny, heartfelt production explores ambition, self-belief, and the weight of expectations placed on young people — all through the powerful bond between siblings.
The story
Meet twins Daisy and Luke, growing up on a high-rise estate where dreams of escape collide with everyday reality. Each has a label thrust upon them: Daisy is branded the “*****”, while Luke is hailed as the “genius”.

As they navigate school, family, and their shared dream of flying, the question becomes clear: will their bond lift them up together, or pull them apart?

With humour, honesty, and warmth, My Brother’s a Genius examines neurodivergence, sibling rivalry, and how labels can shape — and limit — who we believe ourselves to be.
