Discover Sheffield’s Victorian Garden Cemetery and the stories within
Step into one of Sheffield’s most atmospheric historic spaces with the January History Tour at Sheffield General Cemetery — a unique Victorian Garden Cemetery designed in the style of a landscaped park.
With more than 87,000 burials, the cemetery offers a remarkable window into Sheffield’s social, industrial, and cultural past, told through the lives of the people laid to rest here.
Who will you hear about?
On this guided tour, you’ll uncover stories connected to some of Sheffield’s most significant historical figures, including industrialist Mark Firth, reformer Samuel Holberry, sweetmaker George Bassett, and the founders of Cole Brothers— the business that later became John Lewis.
What you’ll see on the tour
The striking French-inspired catacombs
Listed monuments and memorials, each with their own story
The beautifully restored Samuel Worth Chapel, now a thriving cultural space
After the tour, visitors are invited to relax at the Samuel Worth Chapel, where the café and bookstall will be open from 11:00am to 1:15pm, offering a free cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.
This tour is ideal for anyone interested in Sheffield history, heritage, architecture, and the hidden stories that shaped the city.
