Public Consultation Announced to Shape the Future S1 Artspace - Arts Charity Set to Begin a New Chapter in Former Haymarket Yorkshire Bank, Sheffield.
S1 Artspace is inviting local residents art lovers and heritage enthusiasts to view and have their say on its plans to transform the former Yorkshire Bank on Haymarket, Sheffield, into an ambitious new cultural venue.
A public consultation and exhibition will take place on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th October inside the Grade II Listed building in Castlegate. For many, this will be the first opportunity in over a decade to step inside the historic Victorian landmark and view its proposed transformation from derelict bank to vibrant cultural hub.
THE CONSULTATION:
Location: Former Yorkshire Bank, 2 Haymarket, Castlegate, Sheffield, S1 2AT
Dates: Friday 24th and Saturday 25th October
Times: 1100 – 1500
Drop-in event - no booking required
Visitors to the consultation will be able to:
Step inside the building itself – some of its original features and character are visible.
View the architects' plans and a 3D model of the building.
Meet the project team, including architects Carmody Groarke and S1 Project staff.
Share your views on the proposals to help to shape the final designs.
Input from the consultation will inform S1 Artspace’s planning application due to be submitted to Sheffield City Council in early 2026.
BACKGROUND: Built in 1871 as Sheffield's Head General Post Office, the sandstone building has witnessed the city's own evolution - serving as the Sheffield Stock Exchange for over 50 years, before becoming a Yorkshire Bank branch until 2014.
Founded by Sheffield artists in 1995, S1 Artspace has championed contemporary art for over 30 years – but until now, never had a permanent home in the city. Having supported more than 250 artists through its studios and presented nationally recognised exhibitions, the transformation of the former Yorkshire Bank marks S1’s first owned space, securing a sustainable future for the charity to continue championing contemporary art in Sheffield for generations to come.
Initial designs by architects Carmody Groarke will restore this landmark building and repurpose it as the organisation's first permanent home - complete with soaring public galleries across two historic floors, workspace for artists and creatives in the city, a gallery shop showcasing local artists and makers, and an independent basement bar.

Nora Brown is the “brightest young star in old-time music” (Songlines), playing traditional music focused on southern Appalachian banjo and guitar, with her singing revealing her “thirst for storytelling.”( NPR) . She digs deep: “a reverent nod to deeply-rooted ole-time traditions, and an exhibit of sonic heirlooms carefully amended to meet a modern moment with vintage elegance.” American Songwriter. The New Yorker called her most recent solo record Long Time To Be Gone “a disarming collection of traditional laments and exquisite banjo instrumentals.”
Nora will perform in a duo with award-winning fiddler Stephanie Coleman. First brought together by Brooklyn’s tight-knit old-time music community, Nora Brown and Stephanie Coleman share a rich musical partnership that belies their 20 year age difference. Stephanie is a master old-time fiddler, having recorded with and toured internationally over the last two decades with celebrated artists including trailblazing all-women string band Uncle Earl.
Beginning at age 6, under the tutelage of the late musician and scholar Shlomo Pestcoe, Brown also counts Alice Gerrard, George Gibson, and the late John Cohen, Lee Sexton, and John Haywood among her teachers and mentors. Just nineteen years old, Brown has released three albums, a single, and an EP on Jalopy Records – all of which have charted on the Billboard Bluegrass Charts during the first week of release. Across each haunting collection of traditional music, Brown’s playing is lucid, confident, and full of grace.
She has toured across the US, Europe, and Japan, playing renowned festivals including the Newport Folk Festival, Cambridge Folk Festival, Roskilde Festival in Denmark, Winnipeg Folk Festival, and Live Magic! in Tokyo. She has performed on NPR’s Tiny Desk twice, TED Salon, WNYC’s Dolly Parton’s America and an official showcase at the 2022 Americana Fest in Nashville.
“Some of the most interesting and haunting traditional music we’ve heard… impossibly talented… One thing that I really loved about both your albums is that both your banjo technique and your vocals are amazing. You seem to be mining these old songs with emotions far beyond your years.”
