  1. I came home from work today to find someone presumably Amey had painted large 20mph signs on our road.

I noticed a fresh 20 zone symbol painted on the road of my block today for the first time.

There needs to be proper signs as well. Painted on speed limits on there own are not enforceable.

  2. There are restrictive covenants in the Conveyance, but there aren’t any that prevent or restrict the Council’s ability to sell the property. It should also be noted that, although the purchase was funded by J G Graves, the land was purchased from B A Firth and it was Mr Firth who the Council covenanted with. One of these covenants does, however, create a restriction on use. This states that “… the land hereby conveyed shall at all times hereafter be preserved as an open space wood or park and that no buildings (other than those at present existing) shall at any time be erected thereon except as hereinafter provided…

So on what grounds can they sell the land?

  3. From the Charities Commission:

'The Charity Commission has reviewed our position as to whether we would need to authorise the trustee of Graves Park to sell Cobnar Cottage. We have concluded that the charity’s governing document does not contain an express prohibition. The trustee can rely on the statutory power available (contained in section 6 of the Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act) because the proportion of Cobnar Cottage in relation to the size of the charity’s land will not affect the ability to carry out the purposes of the charity.

The Charity Commission does not need to make a scheme to authorise the proposed sale, and does not need to be involved in the sale process.

I hope this is helpful in explaining the position?

    Kind regards, Siobhan'

Sadly it looks like that is that :(

No mention of the land being sold. There may well be nothing expressly prohibiting the sale of a building. There are restrictions regarding the sale of land. I think 'Siobhan' (no surname, who is she, does she exist?) is trying to fob us off.

  4. If it can be "refinanced", why didn't they get it right in the first place?

Is this an admission that they aren't very good at "financing" things?

    :rolleyes::rolleyes:

If you took out a 25 year mortgage and after 5 years interest rates were much lower would you (a) carry on paying the same each month or (b) negotiate a mortgage for the remaining 20 years at a lower rate?

  5. Bizarre doesn't even come close...

... it's OK to have a go at the big-boy multi-nationals, the council, the local newspaper... but not the back street cowboys!

Also, if a business gives a good service we're allowed to name them. Are we allowed to name a company that is merely average? Where do the moderators draw the line?

  6. The HSBC bank at Tankersley is in actual fact a nuclear bunker.

I had a look round once when working for them. The computers underground are protected. The walls at ground level are angled to deflect the blast upwards. The staff who mainly work above ground would be wiped out.

  7. No matter how many times it gets pointed out, the willingly blind still refuse to accept the fact that roads get paid for out of general taxation and not out of the now long-gone road tax.

Yes, there's no road tax but there is VED, fuel duty, VAT on fuel and duty, insurance tax, VAT on vehicles, VAT on servicing, VAT on parts. I think we pay more than enough into 'general taxation' to expect a bit more of it to be spent on roads.

    ...cities in the UK... Chesterfield

    The crooked cathedral :D

A couple of days ago a cyclist hurtling down my road...

At least he was on the road. I've nearly been run over several times by cyclists on footpaths. One was a policeman

Can you give an example of a city you wouldn't think of driving into?

    London

  8. All taxis have a stringent taxi mot every 12 months, older vehicles have one every 6 months and they are more strict compared to a normal car mot otherwise they don't get issued a taxi plate.

Presumably not stricter emissions tests going by the black smoke coming from some of the black cabs. I don't know how they pass any form of MOT. Are they using VW software?
