  1. If Fargate is crammed with market stalls there isn't going to be any 'flow'. Even Meadowhell will seem spacious by comparison.

I suggested there should be a few stalls, not "crammed". The market stalls currently down the Moor are never fully let anyway, so it would in no way be crammed like it is when the continental market comes.

  2. Have you actually seen what the market stalls on the Moor sell? You won't see any quality clothing. I'm not knocking all market stall I just don't see why we need ones on the Moor or Fargate when there is going to be a purpose built indoor market.

Yes i have, and yes most of it looks rubbish, but that's not the point. Most goods in high street shops are poor quality nowadays, except they are dressed up in a well lit store.

Just because there is going to be a new indoor market i don't see why market traders shouldnt have the opportunity to trade from a decent pitch with high pedestrian flow. There have been street markets for centuries, why should only the big stores get the prime spots? The little man trying to earn a living for himself gets shoved in a corner down the quiet ends of town.

  3. Same old multinational shops are better than **** market stalls.

how exactly? because you like blandness and every town to look the same?

It's great having the choice of about 6 mobile phone shops and clothes shops like H&M (hmmm clothing of much poorer quality than most market stalls, except with Madonna or some other celebs mug all over the shop windows).

Not all markets sell rubbish, they sell things people need, just like Wilkinsons dofor example, or are Wilkinsons the acceptable corporate version of a market that the general public wants nowadays?

  4. I find it unbelievable so many of you think it's acceptable to just tell the stallholders tough luck and "bugger off to Rotherham"

Sheffield Fargate is hardly decent anyway, same old multi-national shops you see on every high street in the country, very bland and boring with zero character.

I think a few market stalls would be alright, but not as many as when the (so called) "continental" market is there because there simply isn't enough custom to go around anyway, let alone space.

Fargate will become quieter as the retail centre shifts to Sevenstone, as the new shops are built i think you'll find more shops units elsewhere sitting empty.

Some people say the Moor is a dump because of the market stalls, but even without the market stalls it would be crap - name one shop down there worth going in, Atkinsons? lol, Debenhams? the whole concrete canyon is depressing.

  5. there is nothing wrong bundling second hand consoles in this way, however they are not allowed to bundle NEW consoles in this way, well, they can, but if requested they cannot refuse sale of the console on its own, but with second hand ones they can..

I thought a retailer was free to refuse to sell anything to anyone he/she wants?

  6. no one is being ripped off, people aren't forced to pay the high prices at gun point. don't wanna pay £100's of pounds? then walk on by, some other fool will buy them so why should the sellers care? good luck to 'em i say.

Nintendo should make more - i find it hard to believe they can't keep up with demand after all these months of production.

  7. Christ! I've half a mind to flog mine second hand and then buy a brand spanking new one in January!

Except I'm not a greedy get like these shops are! ;)

perhaps not greedy, but you'd be mad to not take 3 or 4 times what you payed for it!!

Anyone wanna buy a DS?? lol, only kidding.

  8. All these "shortages" of consoles this xmas (and last) - seems crazy to pay over the odds for something which has been in supply all year, and has been available for around 3 years (DS has anyway). The power of marketing i guess.

on a side note - Game in Meadowhall had Wii's yesterday, not sure about DS's

  9. Was the basket a whicker type basket? the gate must have hit her quite hard to damage it, they seem pretty lightweight to me. I suspect you won't get a replacement basket unfortunately, there would be a lot of claims if Morrisons paid out for this. It's no different if, for example, a regular door hits you, you can't claim for that, it's just a risk you have to take when out and about. Shop at Morrisons at your own risk i guess!

Those barriers seem rather pointless to me anyway, but hey...

  10. I personally wouldn't grass him up for it, but i'd make it awkward for him or any other bus driver to steal from his employer by asking for a correct ticket. It'll come back on him eventually if he does it regularly.

Theft is wrong whoever it's from, it's nothing do with being 'whiter than white' it's about being honest. You don't steal from your employer just because you don't get paid much - simple really.

  11.

That goes even more for the fairground ride they had there last week.

Why is that exactly?? Do you find fairground rides offensive just because they are near a memorial? why more offensive than a market? How close is too close in your opinion? The memorial is still accessible after all.

In my opinion it isn't offensive to hold events such as these, wether for commercial gain or not, next to a war memorial. It's an open space in the middle of town - why not utilize it now and then?

If people want a memorial in constant solitude and away from the goings on of everyday life then it should be in the middle of nowhere not in a busy area of town. To be honest I think some people take offense far too easily.

  12. After speaking to the manage today the cinema has 6 screens refurbished downstairs and a further 5 being redone currently. The box-office has closed as it is being relocated into Margaritas (now owned by Vue). Apparently the nww box office and new refreshment stand will be inside the old building that was Margaritas around March time.

If the city council also grants them a license there will also be a bar upstairs where the current refreshment stand is.

    Hope this helps!

Hi yellowboy, do you have any idea what is happening where the Namco amusements/casino used to be please?

  13. last time we went the box office was open, and it wasn't that long ago as it was to see H.Potter.... the cinema at m.hall has been going sownhill since Vue opened anyway.

On the note, how hard is it to get parked at Vue on a weekend?! you have to get there about 5pm!!

Isn't Vue at Meadowhall? (used to be called Warner Cinema?)

I've only been to the pictures at Meadowhall a couple of times ages ago when it was all shiny and new.

It's Cineworld/Centertaiment everytime for me, although that place is getting a bit grubby in some screens.

  14. From other threads and local gossip, its the rents that put so many shops off. :( Its a big risk opening any business, but add in sky-high rents and you've no chance.

Why don't the landlords take note? Like wopp said, the large unit in the precinct has been empty for ages, surely dropping rent (and keeping it at a realistic level at review time) would be better than an empty shop. The council don't help with sky high business rates, for which the business gets very little in return (certainly less than you get for residential council tax).

Or is that daft "woman-thinking"? ;)

In most cases landlords wait and wait and wait for a tennant rather than reduce the rent, unless they have so many empty units that it becomes very damaging to the centre. A couple of empty units is no skin of their nose really.

Also, i think having 3 card shops in one little precinct is just plane daft - but that's another discussion altogether lol, shop use variety obviously isn't an important issue to the owners. I wouldn't be surprised if the independent card shop in there closes before too long, Card Factory will see to that - so say hello to another empty shop with a frightening rent! :(

  15. One busy day a week isn't enough for most businesses to survive.

If hillsborough is to attract any decent shops people need to stop wanting everything for nothing and spend their money in places other than cheapo discount stores like wilkinsons, card factory, jonathon james, home bargains etc etc. These are all low quality shops selling low quality stuff but they are present in Hillsborough because that is what the majority of Hillsborough folk buy and so only the chainstore cheap discount places will survive.

The large shop unit next to the cafe in Hillsborough Shopping Centre has been empty for years now, that speaks volumes for Hillsborough - a prime spot yet it stands empty. The rent for it is high, but if the area had any promise it would be occupied by now.

  16. It's not rocket science really, the closure of so many shops in Hillsborough is down to lack of support from the majority of people, people who choose to spend their money in Morrisons or online or in Meadowhall for example. I don't blame people for saving money, but those people should be prepared for the end result of their failure to spend in local shops, so is it worth the savings?
