About the Venue
The Montgomery Theatre is a historic, community-focused arts venue in Sheffield city centre, with a proud tradition of championing creativity for children, families and local communities. In January 2025, the Montgomery officially joined the Sheffield Theatres family of venues, strengthening its role as a leading participatory arts centre for young people across South Yorkshire. Today, it hosts a lively programme of amateur and professional performances, youth theatre, workshops and holiday activities, alongside many of Sheffield Theatres’ education and participation strands.
Housed in a landmark building dating back to the 19th century, the Montgomery takes its name from poet, reformer and hymn writer James Montgomery, whose belief in the power of art to drive social change still shapes the venue’s ethos. The theatre features a 420-seat auditorium and is available for hire by amateur dramatic societies and community groups. With equality, inclusion and access to cultural education at its heart, the Montgomery remains a vital social and creative hub for Sheffield.
