A sparkling Gilbert & Sullivan classic sails into Sheffield
A fizzing comedy of love, power and mistaken identity arrives at the Lyceum as English Touring Opera presents The Gondoliers, one of the most joyful and satirical works by W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan.

Bursting with melody, wit and absurdity, The Gondoliers was Gilbert & Sullivan’s last great success, combining romantic comedy with a sharp send-up of monarchy, class and privilege.
What’s the story?
Two handsome Venetian gondoliers discover that one of them is the long-lost heir to the throne of Barataria — but nobody knows which one.

As they attempt to uncover the truth, a whirlwind of confusion threatens:
Their marriages
Their royal claim
And their carefully balanced lives
What follows is a deliciously chaotic tale where love, loyalty and logic are constantly turned on their head.
A bold new production
This new staging is directed by Liam Steel, who previously helmed English Touring Opera’s Olivier Award-winning production of Paul Bunyan. Expect a visually rich, playful and musically thrilling interpretation that brings fresh energy to this beloved operatic comedy.

A searing opera where theatre, jealousy and reality collide
A masterpiece of Italian verismo arrives in Sheffield as English Touring Opera presents Pagliacci, Ruggero Leoncavallo’s gripping drama of love, obsession and revenge.

When Canio, leader of a travelling theatre troupe, begins to see his own life reflected in rehearsals for an upcoming performance, suspicion takes hold. Convinced that his wife is having an affair, Canio’s emotions spiral — raising the question: can art ever be separated from real life, or does the stage merely expose the truth beneath the mask?
Opera ripped from real life
Written by Ruggero Leoncavallo, Pagliacci was inspired by a real-life crime from the composer’s own childhood. The result is a tightly focused, emotionally charged opera that packs passion, melodrama and violence into a relentless evening of theatre.

Famous for the aria Vesti la giubba and its devastating play-within-a-play climax, Pagliacci remains one of opera’s most powerful explorations of jealousy and public performance.
Creative team
This new English Touring Opera production marks the directorial debut of Eleanor Burke, founder of the pioneering sustainable company Green Opera. She is joined by ETO’s
Music Director Gerry Cornelius, bringing fresh intensity and clarity to this classic work.
