Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird – Sheffield LyceumAaron Sorkin’s acclaimed stage adaptation comes to Sheffield
To Kill a Mockingbird arrives at Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre as part of its first-ever UK & Ireland tour, presented by Jonathan Church Theatre Productions.
Written by Aaron Sorkin and based on To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, this riveting courtroom drama became a Broadway and West End sensation, selling out performances on both sides of the Atlantic.
A timeless story of justice, courage, and childhood innocence
Set in 1934 Alabama, the story follows lawyer Atticus Finch, who strives to instil kindness and empathy in his children while facing the moral test of his life — choosing to uncover the truth in a town determined to suppress it.
Inspired by Harper Lee’s own childhood, To Kill a Mockingbird has sold over 45 million copies worldwide, won the Pulitzer Prize for Literature, and remains one of the most influential and debated novels of the 20th century.
An award-winning creative team
Sorkin’s adaptation brings new urgency and clarity to the story, paired with visionary direction from Bartlett Sher, former Director of New York’s Lincoln Center Theater. Sher’s acclaimed productions include My Fair Lady, The King and I, and South Pacific.
Sorkin is best known as the creator of The West Wing and as the Oscar-winning screenwriter of The Social Network, A Few Good Men, and The Newsroom.

Crown of Blood – Sheffield CrucibleA bold reimagining of Macbeth set in 19th-century Yorubaland
Crown of Blood is a powerful new stage production from Sheffield Theatres and Utopia Theatre, written by Oladipo Agboluaje.
Recasting Shakespeare’s Macbeth within the civil wars of 19th-century Yorubaland, this gripping drama explores ambition, prophecy, power, and moral collapse through a rich African historical lens.
The story
Fresh from defending the kingdom against invaders, General Aderemi is promoted to Field Marshall — fulfilling the first prophecy of the oracle. When a second prophecy declares that he will become King, Aderemi and his wife Oyebisiembark on a ruthless and bloody mission to secure the throne.
Driven by ambition and haunted by fate, the couple’s rise exposes the devastating cost of power and the fragility of moral restraint.
Creative team and context
The production is directed by Mojisola Kareem, Artistic Director of Utopia Theatre, whose previous work includes Death and the King’s Horseman. Crown of Blood was developed with the support of the National Theatre’s Generate programme, helping bring this ambitious retelling to the stage.
By blending Shakespearean tragedy with Yoruba history and culture, Crown of Blood offers Sheffield audiences a fresh, urgent perspective on one of theatre’s most enduring stories.
