Council Tax - Its Taxing alright

I live in a one bed flat in Hillsborough and the council have the temerity to charge me £800. Problem is that I fail to see what actual benefit I get from this tax payment........ Bins emptied once a week and thats it!

 

Seeing as it's takeaway central round my way we get discarded kebabs etc on the pavement plus whatever associated detritus is chucked on the floor littering the area. And how long does it stay there I hear you ask............ Bloomin' ages!!! ITS NOT HYGENIC!! All it does is wind me up and feed the multitudes of carrion flying/crapping over the city.

 

The roads are a state and when they do see repair it's a cowboy job which means they need to disrupt everything again in 6 months. Half assed work means annoyed members of the community, but hey it means if they don't get it right now they'll still have work to do in half a years time.

 

It's an exorbitant price to pay for living in ones own home when the related services received are minimal at best.- Not that I advocate the privatisation of any government service but if this situation was related to a company they'd have no customers and would have filed for bankrupcy long ago.

 

The tagline for the council tax office should be "Council tax, Pay it - you're a mug. Don't pay it - you're a criminal. Either way your money is ours"

 

Rant over and spleen vented.

I'm the more preferable possition that I still pay band A council tax, but my house has gone up in value enough to be in band B.

All properties should have gone up proportionately in your area, so you should still be in band A.

I suppose an exception to this is if an area as a whole has become more desirable since the last valuation. Then the bands would go up since the properties would be worth more.

I thought it was (for example) everything upto £50K was band, regardless of where you were in the city, everything £50K to £100K was band B etc.

I didn't think the bands were dependant on where you lived.

If business rates re anythink to go by we are all in for a shock

Just had our revaluation in the post

 

Not the same I know as council tax but,:gag:

 

Our ratable value has gone up from 5.500 to 10.500 an increase of 5000 pounds:suspect: I think this will equate to approx 1.200 pounds a year extra to pay:rant:

jan2002 - at least you can get Business Rates assessed. There are many independant companies who will look into this for you. My business is situated in Crookesmoor/Walkley and we're paying £4,330 per annum - that's a lot of turnover before making a single penny.

 

And I have just learned that Business Rates go straight to central government so it's not as if I'm contributing to anything locally - at least that's how it feels.

 

Rip off Britain, anyone?

I wonder where the most expensive Band A property is. I once saw a 4bed semi on Broomgrove road - in Council Tax Band A and the asking price was £200,000. Seems strange that a house this size is in the same band as a 1bed flat on City Road. I know it's because of property rises, but surely a change is now needed...
