Anyone work for Bradbury construction.

Anyone here used to work for Bradbury construction?based at sharrow I started there in 1973 as an apprentice in the joiners shop then was moved to site work in firth browns steelworks where there was a lot of expansion and updating going on at the time,what was the point!!sheffield steel was the envy of the world!!what happened,Bradburys has gone too I believe!!progress??? I think not!!!!

Juat wondered if anyone on here ever worked for Bradbury construction ltd,I started as an apprentice in 1973 and attended Shirecliffe college on block release,I remember all the workshop joiners and the wood machinist also the yard man who ran a little orange reliant and kept a mad german shepherd dog in a cage at the bottom of the yard.

I did for a few weeks back in the 50's. I'd tried to get a start as a bricklayer, but at the time I was a bit inexperienced at the job so I finished up as a labourer.

I remember old man Bradbury. He used to spy on us. The job I worked on was the 'Dove and Rainbow', which, as far as I remember, was at the back of Cockaynes. I was putting in the concrete floor joists, and he used to stand below the wall opposite, so all you could see was his hat and a pair of eyes.

Somebody once told me how he once had two labourers under this kind of surveillance while they were having a quick fag, so he sacked them.

The only trouble was they were working for somebody else.

I worked for Bradbury,s in the 60,s The Foreman was called Vic Spivey who taught me more in 12 months working with him than i learned as an apprentice.

Vic went on to be the Dangerous Structures officer at the Town Hall and I again had the honour to work along side him in this work.

The other bloke i remember from Bradbury,s was Charley Wild the lorry driver who Vic used to say was the most honest man he had ever had work for him,

Charley lived on Grouse St at Walkley.

the yard man was my uncle doug is full mame was doug pugh yes the dog was mad.doug sadly died awhile ago he was a good bloke.

Sorry to hear about your uncle. I knew him when I was a kid as my dad was foreman painter and decorator. Iirc his nickname was ginger and I certainly remember his dog in the yard at the top of Cemetary Road.

 

My dad worked along side Nev, and I clearly remember spending many days one summer at Pinxton in Notts where they were renovating a row of houses.

Resurrecting this. Does anyone have any photographs? I noticed that there was an anniversary mug for sale on Ebay from Bradbury's centenary in 1980.

Bradbury's building has been pulled down. I am researching it and was shocked when I went there.

I worked there as apprentice Painter & Dec 78-82 . Formen were Keith Dixon and Nev ?... Main man was Eddie Daglass who i rarely saw. One of the highlights was painting at the Trent Bridge ground of Nottingham Forest after they had just won the League and European Championship Cup 1980 !!

I also painted the white Transit and mk1 & 2 Escort vans with the Signwritten BRADBURY name in orange !

The foremen you mentioned, was one of them Nev Ridgeway ?
