Dug
http://politics.guardian.co.uk/homeaffairs/story/0,11026,1352275,00.html Looks like there will only be eight casinos initially. I wonder if one will be located in Sheffield?
scottf
Sheffield united have just requested planning permission for a very large one built onto the back of the south stand, it has the support of the local residents and some of the council, the only other place in sheffield is near the don valley stadium, there is plans for one there but i don;'t belive there as advanced yet. Dug
There are also plans for a third poposal near Meadowhall. Will it be the Government who decides where to locate the casinos or the actual operators themselves?
scottf
I think the goverment will decide on the BIG one's like the one's in vegas but its down to the council to grant permission for the smaller one's.
nick2
I hope we get a big one, with restaurants, bars, a cinema and somewhere for "shows" etc. It will be somewhere different to go out for the night.
Ned Ludd
There are 3 large ones competing for one "place" in Sheffield and also may have to compete against Leeds as well (if Yorkshire was to have only one Supercasino)
Dug
I heard that one will be in London and one in Glasgow. Then a couple of seaside resorts, leaving the rest to be situated in Urban regions.
Ned Ludd
Tessa Jowell will announce Today that there will only be 8 Supercasinos built. (Therefore expect the one for this region to be built in Leeds)
Greybeard
Dunno why the govt. don't build and run these casinos, that way all the profits would go back to the tax-payer instead of being siphoned of to American billionaires, and it would be a way of re-deploying all those thousands of civil servants Gordon Brown is going to make redundant. You only have to look at the extortionate levels of duty on tobacco, booze and petrol to appreciate the huge amounts of revenue to be gained from our other vices - why exclude gambling ? State run brothels would also pay pretty well too, and remove all the dangers of predatory pimps and prowling psychopaths that prostitutes are presently subject to. Sorry about that last sentence...my keyboard seems to be having a 'p' day
