There are a few ways to improve your page ranking, but many of them will get your website permanently blocked if Google were to find out.

The best approach is the simple one: -

- Create a simple and well built website.

- Ensure that the keywords that you wish to be picked up on are relevant to the text on your website, remembering that search engines cannot read images, so if images on your website have a lot of text in - make sure the 'alt' has the same text.

- Google for example uses PageRank to judge a websites relevance, the best way to improve this is via links to your site from similar websites.

There really is very little need to pay for it these days i think

Because your approach is all wrong. Your original post is full of spelling and grammar errors which doesn't instill me with confidence to begin with.

A lot of SEO is common sense. Paragraph content matching its description, good meta tags, submitting site to URLs directories etc. Do a bit of reading on the subject and do as much as it you can for free :)

I pay a generous amount each month for SEO for my website. Having come out of the sandbox end of February, im moving swiftly up with many keyphrases on pages 1 and 2 of Google with an extremeley competitive set of keywords. The 3-5 top phrases are out of my league this year but its a waiting game and no amount of 'tricks' brings sustained success for a website.

Inbound one way links are the thing these days, and all the other stuff including keyword density, tags, titles, descriptions, etc are still required to add to the mix for the overall respect from Google.

The only true way to avoid beng dumped by Google is to not try to outwit them.

Well, there was a famous case last year of BMW being blacklisted from Google for using 'illegal' SEO methods. Here's the article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4685750.stm

Search Engine Optimisation is so simple that you have to be an expert in the field to truly create significant differences, you can pay experts to do it because that's what they've been doing for years, but the best way to start is to show the search engines what you show your users.

For example, a website which sells Radios is likely to have detailed sections of text using the words Radio, Station and the companies name numerous times. If you were to include these commonly used words in your META Tags as keywords, then you're likely to achieve a relatively sound page rank. However, if you use the keywords TV, Sony and Computer for example, the content on your website isn't likely to represent a huge amount of relevancy to these keywords and you'll get a low page rank.

Then, once your context fits your keywords, the best way to optimise you're pagerank is to have websites in the same categories linking to your website; with high profile websites having a greater effect than small start up sites. So, sticking with the example, a website that sells radios would gain a higher pagerank if popular forums that specialise on the use of radios linked to them numerous times etc.

The way Google does it is:

- What are the keywords?

- Do the keywords match the content?

- How useful is this website? (determined by external, 3rd party links)

Then it determines your pagerank by comparing you to other websites requesting the same keywords.
