Any Over 60s Clubs?

Recommended Posts

My mum is 66 and lives in Spain on and off throughout the year; she has a great social life over there going to coffee mornings, bowling, lucheons and quiz nights. The fact that she doesn't drive is no problem, there is always someone to offer a lift or a good bus service if not. People are really friendly and she has a wide circle of friends built up from being there for over 8 years since my Dad died.

For health reasons and through missing her family she will be spending more time here in Sheffield now, but will find it difficult I think to build up a similar social circle here.

Does anyone have any details of over 60's clubs or relevant social events in the Norton, Meadowhead, Jordanthorpe area, or further affield if it can be reached by public transport?

There's a dance class at the top club on the Dale, Woodseats WMC, advertised as not needing a partner! I live in that area and I don't know of anything anywhere in Sheffield for the over 50s even. We're the forgotten generation :(

To say we're also the 60s generation, I find it really odd that there's nowhere for us to go.

Yes it is riduculous; Sheffield has the highest %age of elderly people and there is nothing for them to do:(

Well, I wouldn't actually call either your mother or myself 'elderly' but neither of us would want to go to a rowdy club full of students or even 30 somethings, probably :D

I wish there was something like the old "Turn-Ups" club that was in Nether Edge in the 70s ... a good mix of ages from late 20s to 60s and a pub/club vibe ... if I knew anything at all about running clubs, I'd open one myself :help:

so from the lack of replies I gather that once I reach 60 I have to sit at home, watch TV and knit?

Looks like it love!!! i logged on to this thread looking forsomething for myself. I have always been active and able to get out and about but have developed a painful foot which is making walking a nightmare. I am going stir crazy at home alone though and would like to go out and socialise . There used to be a group meeting at Ponds forge on Monday afternoons, and also the Oddfellows meet at the Queens head pub and in a cafe under the United reformed Church On chapel walk but I'm not sure when. The U3A also have loads of special interest groups that meet around the city and the library would also have a list and maybe Age Concern too. Sheffield 50+ and the Expert Elders are always looking for members and they actively campaign for issues relevant to older people. However if its a night out we want I'm afraid its very sticky wicket. i'd love to find a night spot that caters for over fiifties- a bit of disco some not too deafening music that allows the hard of hearing to converse wouldn't go amiss-- but i'm afraid in this city I've yet to find such a place--- if anyone knows about it please let all us square eyed knitters know!

Try The Nelson Rock-Bar Furnival Gate.

On a Monday night, a few of us oldies meet for a drink and play the old rock

songs, on the FREE Jukebox.

It's Central so easy to get too, and free parking on the road after 6-30pm.

Or the buses stop over the road or round the corner.!

If there's anyone interested in starting a social or friendship group in the Norton/Meadowhead/Woodseats area, Sheffield Transport Sports Club would love to accomodate you! Why don't you all meet up maybe on a Friday afternoon? (Although we don't open during the afternoon at the moment we would be more than happy to arrange this for you.) We can offer light lunch snacks and the chance for you to get together for a chat, use of our bar and access to our sports facilities for anyone wishing to join as a member. It seems there are quite a number of people who are finding themselves at a loose end with no specific venue to use as a base, so why don't you give us a ring? Our number is 2374130 if you need further details!

I am 22 years old and doing my PhD in Sheffield, I require aged 60 and over to take part in a study which looks at the ageing brain and the effects of culture on assessment in dementia. Please e-mail me for more information, and thank you for reading.

Delaney's music bar on Friday night seems to attract an older crowd. They have a live band usually playiing blues.

If you want a social club there is Sheffield IVC

My mum is now nearly 72, Can't see her going to the Nelson or Delany's on her own! :hihi: She still goes over to Spain a lot so she couldn't really start a club or meeting herself as she wont be there every week.

Any other suggestions 5 years on?
