We had loads of lightning here in Chapeltown an hour or so ago but I didn't hear much thunder - doesn't one cause the other?

I think that certain types of lightning don't trigger thunder, as the thunder is the sound of the air rushing in to fill the gap created when a groundstrike superheats the air as it passes through.

 

The lightning I've seen tonight seems very wimpy, and the lightning strike website I use hasn't registered any groundstrikes in our area.

I thought it was the neighbours security lights that kept coming on...........but no it was lightning..............but no rain or thunder......sorry for the late reply. Fell asleep
