Has anyone ever had a book published?

Recommended Posts

I guess I found out a little late about that publisher. Well, it didn't cost me anything to have it printed. Although I may not be a good promoter, I can sell a few through my own networks and I do mean A FEW.

For the next serious book I write, I'll give that Lulu a try.

If Publish America prints ANYTHING, I may have some interesting book ideas that, may **** a lot of people off, that no other publisher would touch and even a few getting on the net may teach Publish America a lesson about printing material they don't really look at.

Hellbender, it's been done before. Google "Atlanta Nights" for the first sting, and "Crack of Death" for the second (I was involved in the writing of CoD, and can guarantee that it is really very bad).

Currently, PA has in production a book called "How to Break Into the Porn Industry", and I believe there is another title (perhaps more than one) which centres on graphic descriptions of child abuse/child porn. If they'll publish those, I can't see them learning anything from anyone.

I have to admit. Even I can't top Child pornography. I guess I'll just cross Publish America off my list. I checked out the Lulu site and It did look like a better deal. I could probably publish something contriversial through them also, since I'm not promoting Child abuse or child pornograpy.

I should have known better by the simplicity of their name: Publish America. They didn't even find a good name for the company. At least Lulu sounds like a real publisher.

One more thing. Now that the book is publlished by Publish America, what is the best thing to do. Should I promote it the best I can? Is there a way to change publishers? Do I just wait for the copywrites to run out?

Any suggestions?

First off, DO NOT BUY ANY COPIES OF YOUR BOOK. NOT EVEN ONE.

If you provided PA with a list of contacts, you must contact them all yourself as soon as you can and warn them not to buy/order/consider a copy for themselves.

Email PA and let them know that you're not going to buy any books, and that your contacts won't either. Ask to be released from your contract. Keep asking (every week) for that release no matter what they tell you. Be civil, but persistent.

I cannot imagine using a manual typewriter to write a book – mine would be covered in Tip Ex with all the mistakes. I do still use paper and pen for editing, then go back to Word with the scrawled-on print-out to edit in the changes.

that's how I prefer to do things as well. It's surprising how many mistakes get missed with on-screen editting; not just typos or grammar but also structure and content. By the time I've finished doing a paper edit, Spaghetti Junction is easier to navigate :)

I had my first book published last June... More Ketchup than Salsa: Confessions of a Tenerife barman (Summersdale).

It's a humorous account of swapping a career in fish entrails on a market for a life as a British bar owner abroad.

You can find it on Amazon.co.uk just search for cawley ketchup

They were ghost-written, so I'm not allowed to promote them as my own. I'll PM you.

For anyone interested in self publishing I highly recommend lulu (not allowed to post the full address, according to forum rules). I was told about it by one of the moderators on this forum and I'm very grateful for the suggestion. My son and I have published my father's memoirs on lulu. It's fantastic and very inexpensive if you just want a few copies for friends and family but with a professional look. My father is chuffed to bits that his site has had 110 hits and sold 18 copies! Plus you can revise/add pictures/change the cover etc. at any time. Marvellous!
