Applegrim   10 #114 Posted March 12, 2005 This is going back donkeys years, Ray Shacklton would be possibly 70 now, so it must be grandchildren you know, they used to live up Gregory Road, on the right hand side opposite the Boards, Ray also had a brother, but I can't recall his name. they knocked about with Nick Carter who lived at the end of Foster road, he was the son of Nick Carter the Barber, who's shop was opposite Heeley Church.Does anyone remember "Chopper" who sold fruit and fish and flowers outside the Waggon? if you wanted him to serve you , you had to knock on the pub window, or what about Mickie Parelli who lived on Cambridge Road, at Christmas he'd dress a wall clock up with a santa's face, and he had a stuffed bird in a cage that he'd wind up asd let it sing. These small things seemed to make us so happy back then, and why we remember Heeley with such Happiness.
 Share this content via...
chuffinel   10 #115 Posted March 12, 2005 Hey guys. I used to deliver papers for Colley's the newsagent. Can't remember whether that was on Carter Rd, Nicholson Rd or Gregory Rd. I know it wasn't too far from the "49 steps" which dropped down to Albert Rd. Memory you know ! I used to deliver all over that area from 1952 to about 1955. Cambridge Rd, Kent Rd and as far as Albert Rd I got stopped by a policeman once real early in the morning, 5:30am or so because I wasn't 14 years old yet. Anyways nothing came of it so I just carried on. I probably knew some of you people. I remember "Chopper" and also the barbers. Barbershop had all these pictures on the wall of old boxers and racehorses I think. Could Ray Shackleton's brother been called Tony ? I'm 65 so we 're somewhat in the same era. Applegrim   10 #117 Posted March 12, 2005 It could have been Tony, but there was a gang of them, they were all very smart young men in their time, Hilda Kay's son Jack Russell was another, she had the fruit shop on the corner of Midland Road, I am still in contact with other friends of Gregory Road, and I remember Colley's, he had a daughter called Maureen, can you remember him coming round with the Green'un on Saturday night, God knows what he shouted,It wasn't just Green 'un, he'd got a saying all of his own.
