buck Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Sean Bean sounds just like us Sheffielders. My sister lives in Connecticut, and when I went over they couldnt understand what I was saying.I've been in Connecticut thirty years and they still can't understand a word I say except " What you having ".When I go to the pub they all shout "Ayup".

Joto Posted June 14, 2007 Posted June 14, 2007 Raskel Have you seen the Movie 'Full Monty' well when the Steel Industries shut down, things were just like it was portrayed in the movie. At that time we were living in Stocksbridge, and the shops were only opening 3 days a week.We had 3 kids and we thought what kind of future will they have staying in England. I had a sister already living in Canada with her family, so we decided to give it a try. That was 33 years ago, our kids are now in their forties, and our six grandkids were born here, so I guess this is home now, its a great country, but I will always have a place in my heart for Sheffield and England.

Our history is rather like yours. I was a few years ahead of you and Sheffield and environs still had a steel industry. But there was something not quite right in the air, and I took fright and left for Montreal. I loved that city then and I do today almost as much as I loved Sheffield. But work brought me here and I have some wonderful little yankee grand kids and a nice home.
buck Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 Sheffielders probably couldn't understand a Yank in their midst, either. Everyone in America thinks their way of talking is the standard and that people from other regions have the accents. I definitely don't have an accent -- but people from Connecticut sure do! I'm one of those gits (mentioned on this forum before!) who turns on the English subtitles when I'm watching British movies. We're the posh Americans doncherknow. I bet you think that Bawstahn and Noo Yawk talk the same. The only one I believe I ever heard from Indiana was Bobby Knight and such language!!

skippy Posted June 15, 2007 Posted June 15, 2007 They are probably all in bed ! (8 + hours in front of us) They will be up soon though - but then we'll be in bed ! Ger off grass, weer guin tu bed sune, weer 9 ours in frunt o yu an it'll bee Sattdy in a cupple arours. Came here for 10 quid in 1970 after dreaming about lovely beaches and sunshine, for 37 years we've been living the dream. Still have family and friends in Sheffield, they've been here and wish they had come with us now that they have seen the place, I came back in 1990 to visit family but could never return to live there as it's too cold, we'll be there next year for a visit. Heaps of people from Yorkshire came here to work in the steelworks & coalmines in the 50's, 60's & 70's so it was like Sheffield in the sun, still got the made in Sheffield emblem on my A#s* & proud of it.
