To be honest racism has become such a perjorative and over-used term I'm not sure it's particularly meaningfull anymore. Why not just use bigotry (where a bigot is a "prejudiced person who is intolerant of opinions, lifestyles, or identities differing from his or her own") to cover all bases?

That's a bit too broad a definition though, don't you think? That could apply to political beliefs, or dress sense even.

its a quote from an asian chief constable who claimed institutional racism by the police service. cant remember his name but he was accused of fiddling expenses.

Jabberwocky, I salute you. :) Just let me get my asbestos underpants on. :)

My interpretation of racism (not the dictionary definition) is an irrational belief or action based purely on the fact that soemone is of a different race or colour to you.

I guess I regard it as a special form of xenophobia.

"Bigotry" is so 1970s though, so Alf Garnett. I assume theyre trying to re define the concept, to modernise it.

People hate Poles and other Eastern europeans, and these people have the same religion and the same amount of melanin in their skins as we do. These people who hate them dont even know the word "Slav" and wouldnt understand it if they did, yet because the Nazis persecuted them, they have to do it too.

I... my mind wandered there a bit.. didnt it...? :D
