Bago Posted June 10, 2007 Posted June 10, 2007 I love bollywood films - don't have a clue what's happening most of the time but the costumes, music, dancing and sheer spectacle of them is fantastic. They just go on a bit too long for someone like me with the attention span of a gnat. Love the listing of the 'joint hosts' on that website - Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, York and Hull, not even in alphabetical order. Look North almost managed to avoid mentioning us at all during its extensive coverage of the event Yeh, why is that?? Considering that it was held in the SHEFFIELD Arena! I feel that we are somewhat cheated of some credibility here, and media coverage too. The cynic in me thinks that they don't want to promote the city more as a touristy place. The other cities will get more from it.

Suave Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 I went and it was fab! Although i'm not in to bollywood all that, it was a great atmosphere and full of very pretty ladies! Well done Yorkshire and Sheffield for putting on a great show in front of a global audience of 1/2 billion in 110 countries! Oh and Shilpa said, much to the appreciation of the crowd: "East or West....Yorkshire is the best!" Brilliant and once in a lifetime event!
Beakerzoid Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 nah...never in HMV but im sure local video shops rent indian films... check some out on u tube... there films give great ideas for asian clothes... well they used to..now the stars wears hardly anything..lol Actually HMV do sell Bollywood DVDs, as do most major retailers. http://www.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/navigate.do?ctx=1000;-1;-1;-1&ctx=-1;5;-1;-1&pGroupID=5&pGenreID=69&WT.ac=frontdoor_left_dvd_bollywood LoveFilm rentals also have a decent range of them to hire out and watch. I recommend Sarkar - 2005 version - (crime drama based on The Godfather novel) and Don - 2006 version - (action flick) for a taste of what Bollywood can be when it isn't all about romance and dancing.
spicey Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 they r beautiful.... as Muslims we're not allowed to wear revealing outfits but most of the actresses are Hindu im guessing.. and in their religion they are allowed to dress in that way More like a famous hindu woman isn't going to have a fatwa slapped onto her for wearing what she wants! (I speak about that Indian-muslim tennis star who wears short skirts). I have to say, after looking at the pics, slightly disappointed about the lack of traditional outfits. That red dress was nasty. Most A-list celebs from hollywood wouldn't be caught dead is something like that, why bother? Bago, hindu girls are supposed to be modest to an extent, some parents are more strict than others. My mum is pretty good about this stuff. I would be allowed to wear what I want but I wouldn't even wear a sleevless top or short skirt (above knee) at home because I think it would be an insult to my grandparents. However I don't even own a short skirt. Aish looked lovely I thought. I've seen her in real life when they were filming in Mauritius a few years ago. She is small though, in fact most of the top bolly actresses are smaller than you would think.
steadiman Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 I worked on the event and from what I saw of the awards ceremony it was stunning. The staging and lighting were technically brilliant and the people involved had a real warmth about them. Does anyone have a recording of the production stage routines as I didnt catch them all. I managed to see the numbers featuring Shilpa Shetty and she was amazing, boy can she move . All in all it was a privilege to be involved in this one off event
faz99uk Posted June 12, 2007 Posted June 12, 2007 funniest part of the show at the arena was when the indian crowd was thanked for turning up - there was a small cheer .... and then the pakistani crowd was thanked and the whole arena went crazy and started cheering - there were more pakistani fans than indian!!!! lol

I thought some of the outfits were quite traditional looking. Maybe it is modernised a lot, cos they all look quite blended. Well, to my eyes anyway. I can imagine. My mom is the same. I think she'll roll her eyes if I wore a string vest out of the house. Ah-ha, I see you wrote "at home". I shall say no more. lol. Short skirts are okay, maybe a good pair of tights to go with it or something. I like them cos they make me look proportional. The actresses look quite tall from their photos though. They don't look that petite and short. I am surprised.
