Agent Orange   11 #2 Posted June 9, 2007 What do you mean by not too far away? You got a specific distance in terms of time to take to get there in mind?  The closest would be Cleethorpes, but that don't tick any of your boxes as it is neither beautiful and it does get pretty busy.  There are a few quiter beaches up on the north yorkshire coastline, but again, if you arent prepared to drive for around 2 hours then they arent really applicable. hennypenny   10 #3 Posted June 9, 2007 Being a bit creative here, Hemsworth Waterpark (near Barnsley) has a sand beach and is good for toddler paddling etc, with boats and a very nice play area  http://www.hemsworthcouncil.co.uk/html/hemsworth_water_park_and_playw.html  Otherwise there are several nice beaches over towards Scarborough, Filey etc, or if you go the other way, near Mablethorpe and Skegness.  Sheffield is pretty near the centre of the country, so there is going to be a fair drive in any direction to get to the sea. Agent Orange   11 #4 Posted June 9, 2007 There is a wonderfully quiet little bay just south of Scarborough called Cayton Bay... the beach itself is situated at the bottom of steap cliffs so it's rather sheltered, there is very little there in terms of shops etc and the only people that I've ever seen down there are the odd walkers and surfers. It's really quiet and would nice on a day like today... also, there are 2 second world war pillboxes situated on the beach, in case you like that kind of thing. Agent Orange   11 #6 Posted June 9, 2007 like driving, so 2hrs there 2hrs back for me is near but do agree, the thread title should be "nearest picturesque beach to Sheff"  thanks both for ur suggestions so far ..!  2 hours is plenty of time to get to the decent beaches along the north yorks coastline... as mentioned above, there is a great beach at cayton bay. Saying that, you could get up there spend a couple of hours chilling on the beach and still have time to visit neighbouring Scarborough or Filey. Halibut   12 #7 Posted June 9, 2007 If you can stretch your driving time to about three and a half hours you could do a lot worse than head for Anglesey, which has dozens of beautiful beaches and coves - some of which will be extremely quiet. I was there a few weeks back and spent a few hours at a gorgeous little beach where we didn't see a soul the whole time we were there. It's remarkably easy to get to. Essentially you go to Manchester and turn left!
 Share this content via...
