Hopes of a bus war

Recommended Posts

First have cut the cost of fares from City centre to Ecclesall/Bents Green. Is this the start of a bus war with Stagecoach involving fare reductions and frequencies increased to something approaching convenient levels.

Or is it a false dawn?

I'd be chuffed to bits if First reduced the cost of their Day Saver tickets. Stagecoach don't come onto Lowedges.

The cheapest option for me when travelling from Lowedges to town is a £4 Day Saver, compared to a tram equivalent of less than £3. Unfortunately, the tram doesn't come near Lowedges, and the only two occasions I used it from Charnock, it set off my balance problems so badly, I couldn't stand up when I got off at the other end!

Here is the press release from FSY website:

First, South Yorkshires leading bus operator, has responded to customer feedback and has changed its prices on certain routes to and from Sheffield City Centre as part of a summer pricing initiative.

From Friday 8th June customers travelling to and from Bents Green, Ecclesall, Greystones and Sheffield City Centre on services 81,82,84,85,86,240 and 272 will pay £1.10 for a single ticket instead of £1.60 (saving 50p). A new return ticket costing £2 is also available to customers.

Also customers travelling to and from Birley, Crystal Peaks, Frecheville, Hackenthorpe and Sheffield City Centre on services 21,41,94/95 will pay £1.60 for a single ticket instead of £1.90 (saving 30p). A new return ticket will cost £3.

Brandon Jones, Deputy Managing Director for First in South Yorkshire, said: "This is a customer driven decision to change our prices on these busy routes to and from Sheffield City Centre for summer.

"We are constantly monitoring our prices to ensure they are attractive to our customers and this is traditionally a time of the year when we look to encourage more people to travel by bus.'

Just a reminder that Stagecoach start their NEW tram feeder bus service TF1 from June 18th so users of 57/58 Stocksbridge service will now have a cheaper option of travel.

I don't understand this bus mularky that gets mentioned so often on here.

Do these two companies run buses on the same routes and charge different fares for the same thing?

Is the cost of a fare roughly proportionate to the distance travelled?

Can a bus company just make up a route and do all companies stop at the same bus stops?

What is the point of a tram?

Apart from subjective reasons such as bad drivers, is there really any difference between the services offered and is one company clearly better than the other?

...and as the PTE have started charging bus operators for each departure from Interchanges and some City Centre bus stops, this cost will have to be passed onto customers in the form of a fares rise before too long.

This is not the operator's fault on this occasion though. The PTE are trying to reclaim money they have spent reimbursing operators for concessionary fares payments, which they were entitled to anyway. It all stems from the government not administering the scheme properly from April 1st last year.
