geocol Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 when I lived at Stocksbridge, (north sheffield) i used to love to take my old dog (befoere the one I have now) out walking on Langsett moors, over toward strines, or nearby, there is my particular favourite, which was the walk from Bolsterstone, down through the Ewden Valley, past the dams, to the main Manchester Road, near what the locals called t'Bitholmes. Yep, I've been up there... even in February! Some of the Swedes have been to Bradfield & Bamford - or Baslow, Froggatt Edge, Eyam - or the Bronte country & North Yorks Moors /Dales , and been delighted. But not all of them... yet! (& The first timers had a better opinion of the city, by the time they'd been in the Fat Cat, or New Barrack Tavern) It's not that they are not interested in the industrial heritage part of things either ... far from it. (The National Mining Museum was most appreciated.) APologies for digressing from the original article.
Plain Talker Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 Before I had to rely on the chair, my favourite pastime was to take-off, on a sunday, one of the walks I love dto do was to get on the bus to Fox House, and then hike to hathersage, either via Grindleford/ Padley/ Padley Gorge or the other way, through Longshaw. Fantastic. Really fantastic. I So miss hiking.
surfinjim Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 oi! oi! Just hold up, there, jim! I will take offence at that! Sharrow has some spectacular architecture! There are some really lovely, ornate, Victorian villas around here. Even if I Won the lottery, I would not move more than a few hundred yards from where I am now, I'd buy one of the beautiful grand properties nearby (perhaps even Sharrow Head House!) Exactly my point Plain Talker. Geocol quite sweepingly said the East and North of the City. I was just trying highlight that the South end of Sheffield has some not so glamourous spots, but also that you find hidden gems within them as well!! A couple of weeks a go I stumbled across the entrance to the General Cemetry. Never knew it was there, but its a real surprise hidden away. As I said, no offence intended. I think you get what I'm getting at........ Jim
surfinjim Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 (I'm from the north of the city myself... and can see how my geographical description has irked you. But, you can't get away from the fact that some parts of the city (that shouldn't be) are a disgrace. There are numerous reasons. One of them is the existance of Meadowhall.) I'm not having a dig, I'd just like an example of the area of the city which is a disgrace. So far its been about the City centre, and not the East or North of the city. I'd certainly back you up on the city centre. If Sheffield was a human body then the markets would be ar** hole! Jim

Mmmm!!! Good memories for me, I lived at the Cross as a kid & we always used to walk to & play around Wharncliff Crags & Ewden Valley's a lovely area.
Alastair Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 Urban walks are the way to go, much more interesting than walking in the countryside.
