I had the great privelege Saturday to attend a dance recital at the High School auditorium by over 400 girls aged from 4 to 18. It was a hot day, and the air conditioners were fighting a losing battle with the crowded place. The girls danced for over three hours with enthusiasm, grace, and skill and for only ten dollars a ticket it was better than a trip to Broadway. The place was full of proud parents and grandparents, including me, the grandad of 4 year old Victoria. They represent the best of what suburban America is all about. Organizing our kids into dance, figure skating, litttle league baseball and softball, basketball, field and ice hockey, lacrosse and soccer. Despite horrors like Columbine and Virginia Tech, which shock and shame us all, our suburbs are generally fairly crime free. Coming back to our girls, they have Irish names, German names, Italian names, English names, Japanese names, Chinese names, Korean names, Arabic names, Jewish names, and they mostly speak only one language with any skill..English. They speak it with American accents using American spelling in America. Why should some people who would call themselves true Sheffielders, and are not, deny them the right to do so within their own land. They are called illiterate, loud mouthed , gum chewing Yankee bitches for no reason other than hatred. Many of our young ladies have probably never known what OED means, and in their perverse text speak way wouild turn it into Obmoxious English Dimwits, except that they have too much class for that.

Snidey, very snidey, I am sorry but I have no idea what Obmoxious means, nearest match in the OED (Oxford English Dictionary) is Obnoxious, is that what you meant in your ramblings? I am glad that your young ladies have class, as they probably wouldn't turn your GBA into Gobby Bullsh*****g American in their perverse text speech. I don't call myself a true Sheffielder, I have told you many times that I am Canadian, I was not born in Sheffield, so I can't be a true Sheffielder. Sheffield is my adopted city, in my adopted homeland. :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: :hihi: You really crack me up old man, I look forward to reading your posts.

Ob-nox-ious correct spelling as per OED.

Definition

obnoxious

adjective DISAPPROVING very unpleasant or rude:

Some of his colleagues say that he's loud and obnoxious.

When she's in a bad mood she's obnoxious to everyone.

I.m glad you enjoy reading my posts, that's what I'm here for, and if my frequent typo errors amuse you and make you feel superior to an old man then so be it, even if its pedantic and shallow.Being serious for a minute, what is behind all this hatred for the United States? During my many years in Canada, when I was also a Canadian citizen, by the way, iIt seemed to be common, more so in Ontario than Quebec. I can't believe it was some feeling of inferiority or dependence because that's not the Canadian way. I valued my years in Canada, made many friends, lived in Montreal, the Gaspe, and Newfoundland and put my oldest son through McGill University. Not bad for an illiterate Yank on AWOL from the RN, eh.

Not bad at all ...... OK seriously, I don't hate Americans, Hate is a very strong word, I hate no one. What I don't like, is being made to look a liar, when I am not. Why would I lie? What would I get out of lying? I haven't questioned you about your life in Sheffield, or where you lived in Sheffield etc, or, in fact where you live now. I take people at face value. I said where I had been in the USA, but that wasn't enough, so I divulged the state, town and street and that wasn't enough. I stated that I have friends in new Orleans, and they sent me photo's of the devastation there, and mentioned in numerous e-mails what was happening. I am pleased to say that they have now finished rebuilding their home, and have moved out of their trailer and back into the house. But I was even accused of lying about that, even though I said I would put some photo's up to prove what I was saying. And then I was accused of being an illegal immigrant, or, being wanted for some crime or other, I found that to be very insulting as well as libelous. So you see buck, as I have said a couple of times, I take no S**t, and I give as good as I take. In fact, I would like to know exactly why, in certain peoples minds, that I am a liar, illegal resident and a criminal in the USA. What started as a little ragging, got out of hand, and not necessarily all my fault, but that is life. I come on SF to discuss topics and to have fun, and as far as I am aware, I don't cause a problem to anyone else. So there you are buck, me being serious.

can someone tell me why they have to start spelling Happiness with a sodding y in it?

It took Mr. Webster many years to create a new language based loosely on English, just to prove we're not a colony any more. He's succeeding.

There is your answer :)

Nah, A mere drop in the ocean is £5.00 or $10.00 whichever way you wish to view it.

I guess it all began when you said some rather unpleasant things about Americans, which not only offended me but also some others both native born and adopted. But that's all water under the bridge. Anytime anyone says undeserved things about the place I now call home I will defend it if it deserves it. I am well aware of America's many faults, just as I hope you are aware of faults with the UK. Perhaps in future we can debate with reason without throwing garbage ( or is that rubbish) at each other. Only time will tell. I will continue to use American spelling, though I have often resorted to English spelling in courtesy to my homeland. Even more so now just to make you grind your teeth. Honestly, I'm just saying this in good humor ( there I go ), and hope you will take it in the same spirit. That's some cute poufty little dog you got there in your avatar.

OK buck, I do have a wicked sense of humour at times, and I will apologise if it did upset people. No country, no person is perfect, we all have our little faults and idiosyncrasies. I wouldn't expect you or anyone else to change the way they say or spell things on here, it all adds to the content of debates. The little dog is a picture I found on the web, I thought it cute too, so I animated it for my avatar, and thank you for noticing that, and the nice comment :). So buck, here's looking forward to friendly debates and dialogue from now on.
