KivWaHistory
Hi all, Just popped to change a bulb in our bathroom (newish conversion) and noticed this: http://s63.photobucket.com/albums/h127/johntanner1979/Wiring/?action=view¤t=1180551221.pbw The things that are bothering me is that there seems to be no casing on the earth wire going into the wider casing, and it is therefore cutting through it (you can tell I don't know what I'm talking about). Secondly, what casing there is on the earth wire seems to have darkened through overheating/burning. Can anybody help??? John
cgksheff
I'm very sorry but your image is too small for me to see, clearly, the problems that you describe. Can you replace it with an image of greater size? Mind you, others may be able to see something!

cgksheff
From what I can see (it is still a bit out of focus and low resolution) the earth is the inverted 'v'? It is common to find three-core cable where the earth is not sleeved but a piece of sleeving is put over the exposed section after the cable has been trimmed/exposed. The main purpose of this is to prevent the earth becoming live in the event of one of the other wires coming loose and touching it. I cannot see clearly the discoloration of the sleeve, but it could be indicative of a loose connection. If you are unsure (as would explain your query) I recommend that you get someone experienced to look at it. (If you are a tenant, ask your landlord to get it sorted.) KivWaHistory
Cheers cgk, We're not tenants but will try to get someone in. Your second paragraph seems to match what I can see re. the sleeving. The discolouration is quite severe and it's that which bothers me most. JT
