julado Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 The second two are not in Stannington. As for the H&H i hear it is being knoced down and the land used for building. Ah, that old "its not in Stannington" chestnut rears its head again. Just as well I suppose with all the trouble from the asbo kids in Stannington. I understand it used to be quite posh!
msdiane Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 I lived on Wood Lane for 25 years from 1965 on "the ESTATE". I thought I grew up in Stannington but now apparantly I didn't, what am I to do??? Where do I come from?? What is my history?? It wasn't Deerpark it wasn't Woodlands, it wasn't Roscoe or even Hall park. Oh dear I seem to have lived the first 25 years of my life in a somewhere but nowhere area of Sheffield............ mmmmmmmmm how bizzare
duffman Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 I used to live in the maisonettes for about 5-6 years, I now live back in the village where we lived 5 years previous to moving into the maisonettes. I found the area had it's problems (where doesn't these days, and it didn't seem to be as bad as it is now) and yes the postal address was Stannington. Despite the postal address we did call it Woodfarm or Deer park area, I must say at the time my friends attitudes changed and some of their parents would not let them come round to the house. Funny how now we are back in the village they don't give it a second thought to it. I liked the area and there are plenty of places down the road I would move back into. Not to argue but just something I have heard if you officially live in Stannington 'village' you pay council tax to both Sheffield city council and Bradfield parish council. It hurts so much more knowing you get two bills to pay Still at the end of the day what does it really matter? Oh and to keep the thread on the actual topic, I hear that the Hare & Hounds pub may have to stay as part of the development. Not sure if this is just rumour, I am trying to find out.
mossdog Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 stannington starts at malin bridge at the bottom of stannington road & goes all the way up to dungworthThus making it larger than the whole of Sheffield DOH!!!
sanman Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 The border to Stannington has moved throughout the years. Anyone who attended the gala and actually read the programme will have seen that it has been as low down as Malin Bridge and as far up as the Sportsman.
sheffsnapper Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 (edited) Hi guys I'm new to the forum, and have been living in Sheffield for 2 years now. I am an urban historian and photographer and my favourite pastimes are climbing and walking. in trying to dig up some info on the old Cricket Pitch in Stannington I came across this string, which really interest me. In my experience with 'place', it doesn't seem to matter what the map/local authority/bus companies, Ordnance Survey or even Her Majesty's Royal Mail think. I would say (subjectively) that place and place-names are what the local people deem important. That is to say, folk from the same physical geograhpical area are entitled to say they live wherever they want to call home. For example, some folk living in the local authority housing in this area we're talking about here would say they live in Liberty Hill (as per the OS maps), while some would say they live in Woodlands View, and some would say they live in Stannington, and some would (maybe?) say Rivelin. Remember, it all depends on the context of the conversation you're having. If you're describing to a non-Sheffielder where you live you might say Stannington, but speaking to a person from Sheffield you might say "I live on Deer Park Road" or "The Deer Park Estate" (as examples; I'm not sure the Deer Park estate actually exists!). I suppose what I'm saying is that place and place-name is a matter of personal choice and is therefore entirely subjective and always an area for heated - progressive - discussion! cheers! Hots on Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 The second two are not in Stannington. As for the H&H i hear it is being knoced down and the land used for building. The gym that was once the Deerstalker pub IS in Stannington, I live near it and my postal address is Stannington. You're one of those Stannington doesn't start until the welcome to Stannington sign outside the Sportsman pub people aren't you ?
