Sheffield airport - what happened?

In brief, the airport's still open for private use, but doesn't do commercial any more because:

a) There wasn't enough commerce to justify it;

b) The runway's too short for low-cost airlines;

c) It didn't have enough air-traffic to warrant buying a radar, and many airlines won't land a plane without radar.

Also - (from wiki) it looks like it's making a loss (about £400,000 per year - ouch!) - looks like it's due to be just a heliport soon if the council has its way.

You have just given a good example of why you shouldn't take wikipedia seriously. Instead why not search for the massive thread on this very forum.
