I am an S.P.S.A. qualified instructor and have been climbing for over 25 years and in all that time have only ever witnessed one accident that required a medi vac rescue. What you must bear in mind is that most amateur climbers will not be "Leading" climbs (placing protection as you ascend) but will be using the "Top rope" method whereby a rope is anchored safely to the top of the climb and both ends dropped down the rock face, so you can effectively pull someone up a climb and if they do slip the only fall that they will take is the distance that the rope will stretch which is usually negligible. Climbing is a safe sport at the lower skill levels if there is someone there that is competent with plenty of experience to watch over beginners. For the climbers on here hows about this for a scare ? 25 foot run out on Darius (high tor) and pulled a flake off 50 foot twanger on the last section WHEEEEEEE BOING BOING... got back on and finished it though when I managed to get my heart back in my chest
