Giant new Tesco on Spital Hill / Saville Street.

Recommended Posts

In the interests of balance (difficult to love Tesco given their recent EOY profit announcement), have there been any other planning applications for this site or Spital Hill in general? If so, please post here.

If there aren't any other serious plans, then it's hard to see this not getting the go ahead. I'm reserving judgment for now...

Did anyone else see the prog last night about Tesco and Sheringham? It turned out the CEO and some other employee had signed a 'secret' deal with Tesco that no other supermarket would be allowed to open there? This was with no apparent reference to the elected members!! An enquiry found no evidence of corruption though.

Go along the wicker and under the arches towards meadowhall and those car garages on your right will soon be a giant Tesco.

Tescos Finance Director was on Radio Five this morning and when asked where they still had scope to expand in the UK he said that Sheffield and Birmingham where two cities where they were least dominant and that they would be building here.

How the heck are these corner shops expected to compete. there used to be FIVE greengrocers and as many newsagents in Hunters Bar. Thanks to the likes of Tesco, Safeway etc they all went out of business.

Understand your concerns - but the corner shops round here (pitsmoor) don't always stock what everyone wants, or they are way over the top price wise. At the end of the day, a supermarket round here, is very welcome and way overdue.

Hang on, does this mean they're going to destroy the entrance to the Spital Tunnel?

This would be a huge loss, its part of our heritage and probably the last reminder of where Sheffield's train station originally was.

Also lets face it, Tesco will move on after a while, but the tunnel will be lost forever. In a more enlightened future we may even have seen it re-opened.

The tunnel wont be affected, as it's up the hill. The new tesco's is on the island between the two roads that split as they go under the wicker.

That's just the ringroad, Tesco have not started yet.

I meant the total refurbishment of the old carpet shop etc including extending the front of the building out by about 20 feet.
